  4. Diatom frustule

Campylodiscus hibernicus is a single-celled freshwater algae in the diatom family. It makes a glass frustule (shell), which is printed here. I started with an STL file kindly shared by Jamie Perrelet from http://www.fractalteapot.com/. I imported the file into Meshmixer to generate supports, which were printed in PVA. This type of object is best printed on an SLA printer, but the Ultimaker handled it pretty well. I'll try to tweak the orientation and print it again.

  5. Cloud

Here is a small cloud I sculpted inside ZBrush last week ;)

some informations about the print :

    Printer : UM2 + Olsson Block + Bondtech Feeder
    Nozzle : 0.6mm
    LayerHeight : 200µm
    Wall : 3 (1.8mm)
    Top/Bottom : 6 layers (1.2mm)
    Infill : 15%
    Temp : Nozzle -> 200° / Bed -> 60°
    Speed : 55mm/s (1st layer at 35mm/s)
Printed with the tip in the air
    Supports : 50° / 15% in density

    Total printing : almost 1h

Concerning the sanding process, I started with a grain at 180 and then after 400 to finish at 600 (personally I do not go down in grain it's already quite smooth in 600 :)

I also made a Time Lapse of the sculpting

  6. Model of Stark Towers as used in 'Avengers Age of Ultron'

During my spell working in the Art department on 'Avengers Age of Ultron' I was asked by the production designer to build a prop to help dress the interior set of 'Stark Towers' The model was to show the new section of tower that replaced the damaged section from the original film. As I only had 4 weeks to build it (including 3d modelling) we needed to simplify the design a bit, hence the lower portion being in laser cut acrylic.
Using my trusty Ultimakers I think I pulled off the desired effect, even if it only appeared in the movie for less than a second!

  11. Kayle 3D Print Model

This model was tested in Cura 15.06. To avoid printing problems, we recommend the following settings:
    Quality
    Layer height: 0.1mm*
    Initial layer thickness: 0.3mm
    Bottom/top pattern: lines
    Skin perimeter line count: 0
Horizontal expansion: 0.04mm (when entering 0.04mm index, the 3D printer perceives the model as monolith, i.e. as having no hidden layers).
*Layer Height 0.1mm is recommended for a better quality for the printed model. However, the printing time will double.
    Speed setups:
    Infill speed: 50mm/s
    Outer shell speed : 30mm/s
    Inner shell speed: 20mm/s
    Top/bottom speed: 20mm/s
    Support speed: 50mm/s
    Travel speed: 150mm/s
    Skirt speed: 30mm/s
    Amount of slower layers: 4
    Infill:
    Infill pattern: Grid
    Line distance: 3mm
    Infill overlap: 20%
    Infill layers: 0
    Support:
    Enable support: Check
    Placement: Everywhere
    Overhang angle: 30°
    X/Y distance: 0.7mm
    Top distance: 0.2mm
    Bottom distance: 0.2mm
    Stair step height: 0.5mm
    Join distance: 0.7mm
    Area smoothing: 0.6mm
    Use towers: check
    Pattern: Grid
    Line distance: 1.5mm
    Platform adhesion:
    Type: Brim
Brim line count: 10 (up to 20, depending on the model’s height)
    Other 3D printing recommendations:
Outer Shell Speed - 20mm/s and Support Speed - 40mm/s settings apply to avoid model deformation.  Apply other settings by default.
Disclaimer: This model will look outstanding if printed on SLA/SLS 3D printer. The accuracy of the model printed on FFF printer can vary from the result shown in the pictures.

  12. Ultimaker Robot Guts and Maker Globe

Ever wanted to know what makes the Ultimaker robot tick?
I was inspired by illustrations such as this one:
    http://altjapan.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341bfd2253ef014e8936f006970d-pi
The "maker globe" was created using a NASA satellite image maps of lights on the earth at night in order to generate the gears.  I assumed that the brighter areas on the map would have a greater density of Makers, so there are more gears populating those areas on the globe.  The lines in the oceans were derived from images of shipping lanes.  I wanted to distill the idea of Makers working together and ideas traveling freely across the globe.
I will be sharing these models for everyone to enjoy on youmagine shortly.

  13. Ghostbusters:The Board Game custom add ons

I'm a huge Ghostbusters fan, and wen the board game came out, it included about 100 amazing figures.. but there were a few things lacking, so I decided to make them myself!
First I did the slime splats you see pictured, modelled in zbrush.
The big project though, was a dice tower based on the Ghostbusters firehouse. The game's figures are based off the comic book artwork, so I decided to do a toon version of the firehouse, based on the old saturday morning cartoon.
Learning how a dice tower works, and printing a rough draft version really helped in the design of this. This like the ramps and angles needed to be adjusted so they came out all the time, and as this was one of my first custom designed printed projects, I had a learning curve learning out how to model for printing, and also how to cut something like this up into parts that were then assembled together.
(The tower and inner dice column were printed together, and the roof, ramps, signs, and dice barrier were al printed separately.)
Also pictured is a replica I did of the hood ornament on the new car in the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot movie.

  14. Bully Trophy from Bullseye

Just a mock up of a Bullseye trophy minus the dart, only really found two pictures on the internet of it so but am fairly happy with it as it was just for fun. Fixing the messed up print on the other hand was not fun. I am very stubborn though, but next time I'm just gonna print the damn thing again!
There was a hole in the mouth so when i acetoned it, it split because it got inside! the legs did not split. I also forgot to add the button in the splitter!! Oh well ill add them in the next one.
Loads of pics to see the madness I went through just to finish it!

  15. A suggestion for a new support type- I Call it "Ramifications"

This is a suggestion to develop a new type of support that gows from the side of the printed part instead of the print bed.
This could reduce material used for support and reduce print time.
I have done two tests to compare, the design can be improved and i am sure a slincing algorythm can be added maybe in "Cura" to have Ramification support.
I added Pictures and the models of two comparative parts.
Let me know what you think and if you can develop the algorythm. This is totally open source suggestion i claim no right for. I only would like it to be named "Ramificaitons".
(STL need to be rotated 90 degrees)

  17. Modified gCreate Rocket

Once I saw the gCreate rocket, I knew I had to print one! It looked like an art statue to me.
I've got zbrush skills, and wanted more of a "flame" look to the thrust, so I sculpted the main engine thrust. The rocket print failed the first time, so I grabbed the remix with the supports. I took a look at it in lightwave, and the supports that were added were way too thick on the fins, so I started with the original model, and added thinner supports that would be easier to remove. I wanted to add lights in the windows, and while I had it in lightwave decided for lighted windows I would have to remove the logos. I also needed some way to get inside the rocket, so I sliced the top off it.
The main thrust flame came out so nice that I decided to add thrust flames to each of the fin rockets as well. I also modelled a inner support structure to allow the leds to be centered at each of the windows.
The whole thing was printed complete hollow in matterhacker pro natural 5 lb, and then rattle can and hand painted.

  22. iPhone X Dock

    Why another phone dock?
The new iPhone X is a few mm taller than the previous phones, so my old printed iPhone dock didn't work anymore. After some browsing I could not find any other dock I liked. The one I liked that doesn't fit does not exist for the X and I dislike mods on STLs/OBJs. The generic ones are typically clumsy or have other issues.
So I decided to design one quickly from scratch. Here's the result I would like to share.
I think there are not enough phone docks out there yet! :-)
