  4. Cura 15 on Win. I think this is an old problem even in previous versions. Brim: Extra build plate adhesion on inside and outside base layer attached to the printed object. It works as expected. Skirt: Print a priming/adjustment layer ring outside of the object. Offset xx mm & number of loops. That too works as expected, except if the offset is set to zero. I would expect that to print a layer attached to the base as number of specified loops on the outside as a skirt with zero clearance. In effect it would work as an outside only brim which is what is needed for some applications. Unfortunately it turns into a brim printing both inside and outside! I am trying to print objects with a clean interior (vertical tube) and both brim and skirt will not allow that. By the way, the expert skirt menu lists skirts as "Line Count". Brim is listed as "Amount" It too ought to be "Line Count". I know, picky, picky :-) Bertho
  5. I like the basic idea since the gearing is simple to do. The taper ought to influence the feed significantly. Think about if the cones were almost flat. A 1mm filament would be right at the drive junction. A 10mm one might be near the tip of the cones and hardly move at all. You also need to keep in mind that filament sometimes is oval, not round.
  6. Very interesting! I like to learn more about the "bar peeling" that you mentioned. Any suggested information source? I have been playing around with dual drive wheels and I am trying to see how this compare. Pulling force relates to friction and force. There will be a lot of force for relatively little spring force with the taper wheels. Is that better than two opposing drive wheels spring-loaded with high force to match the taper wheels' force? I do not know but that is the question to resolve. Bertho
  7. Yes, if the fan fails the heater will overheat. That is why there is a built-in safety thermostat in hairdriers that will temporarily open the circuit. There is also a secondary fail safe link that if it gets even hotter it will permanently melt and disconnect power. A 500W power supply would be very expensive. The heaters are AC powered from the mains.
  8. There is no red hot filament in my case. Th hairdrier heating coils do not glow. The heater is also placed high in the printer so no plastic can fall down on it.
  9. The fail-safe cutoff is in the heater section and kept cool by the airflow at the inlet. If the fan fail or airflow is blocked the heater section will get very hot and the fail-safe will cut off power. This will happen quickly before there is any damage to the printer. It is a standard safety feature of hairdryers. Bertho
  10. Eric, I have a separate PID temperature controller and sensor for the air temperature. The heater block / section has an independent over temperature cutoff if the fan or controller fails.
  11. If you do not mind, what material are you referring to? I have a very customized UM-0 and might have to do a custom part for myself.
  12. Eric: The cartridge heater sounds like an interesting option. I have lots of various shaped heatsinks. Then a low rpm rather large bladed fan to keep the air moving. There are metal boxer fans that might be acceptable. I could always otherwise put the fan motor outside and have the shaft inside with a metal blade fan. You got many interesting projects in Youimage! Jag är från Värmland men bor i Florida. Analog Kid: The vacuum cleaner does not sound like a good idea to me it is big to start with. I like the idea of the toaster oven hear elements. I even have a few laying around from another project.
  13. Thanks for your comments. My motors are outside the enclosure. I am currently running a 400W heater and the heat-up time is marginal. Once at temperature it properly cycles. Using a regular PC fan has two problems: It is not intended to be used at 70C. A PC fan has large air volume but low pressure. The hairdrier heater coil relies on a high airflow to keep the coil temperature safe. High pressure is needed to force the air through the small opening in the hairdryer.
  14. I built a heated enclosure for my UM for printing ABS. See: http://www.vinland.com/blog/?p=191#more-191 Temporarily I have been using a stripped down hair dryer as a heater but it is very noisy. What suggestions do you have for a heater? About 500W is required.
  15. I converted a long time ago to direct drive. I just ordered the GT2 pulleys and belts. I looked at the recommended Chopmeister twister blocks. The design looks good but I do not see any option for tension adjustment. How is that handled?
  16. I have the UM0 and I have been considering for the same reasons to turn the spool 90 degrees and mount it under the table so it also will unroll in the same shape and direction as the Bowden. Bertho
  17. Another strange problem: I successfully printed a large oblong tray, about 180 x 70mm and 19mm tall. Using Win-7-64, Cura 15.02-RC2 and the Ulti-controller. For appearance the convex side was printed up so it needs a lot of support. Zero problems with Cura. On the same tray I added four small mounting studs and a 3mm hole. The CAD model looks perfect. The view in Cura looks perfect. But---- When slicing it in Cura a very large 60x60x60 triangular area inside the upside-down tray is missing the support. One node of the triangle is near the 3mm hole. I have spent way too many hours trying too many things without success. I tried Cura 14.09 on another computer. I tried a repair in an old NetFab. I exported the SolidEdge file as STEP and then imported it back to SolidEdge and then again converted to STL. I was hoping that the conversion process would throw out some artifact that might be causing the problem. I exported the SolidEdge file as IGES and then imported it back to SolidEdge and then again converted to STL. The IGES importing has options for healing STL files and I enabled all of them. I turned it the concave side up. I rotated it 45 degrees on the UM table Many more tries and variations of the above. I removed the hole in the CAD file. The support structure changed but is still way wrong. The 3D rendering looks perfect. It is just the support structure that is wrong. It is hard to fix the CAD file if it is that is wrong when it visually looks perfect. It is difficult to explain and visualize the error so I linked some pictures. I am out of ideas how to fix it. I can always use the old version without the hole and mounting studs and glue in studs and drill the hole but that is not learning what is wrong.   18. Hi Daid, I did not realize it is browser sensitive. Posting using Firefox does not spell check. As far as I can remember almost all current websites do spell check when I connect using Firefox. Please remind the website people to enable or fix it so spell check also works on Firefox. I got to remind myself to use Chrome to connect here. Have a great day! Bertho
  19. I am probably missing the obvious but I cannot find a spell checker. Most programs have it enabled by default these days. I cannot even find a button or option to manually trigger a spell check. It is especially helpful for poor typists and many international users.

  21. Hi, I just installed the 15-02-RC2 on Win-7-64 and UM0. "Find profile from Gcode" does not work for me. Message: only available on files created by Cura version later than 12. My files are created by Cura14-9. Bertho

    Brim bug

    I have supports on the inside, not outside. Other items with internal support print correctly but they do not have an overhang. It is an easy problem to troubleshot since no printing is necessary- it can be seen in Cura's layer mode. You are correct, I just tested it and turning off the support I get a properly touching brim that is also round. Turning on the support the result is as in the the picture.

    Brim bug

    The Brim works fine in general but it clearly fails on this simple cone-shaped object as can be seen in the picture. It looks like Cura calculated the brim based on the largest diameter, not the bottom diameter. I am also curious why the strange shape of the brim on a cylindrical object. By the way, what a pain to add a picture on this forum! Bertho
  24. I have a carrot shaped object symmetrical designed in a CAD program oriented length-wise on the X axis and the top half cut away. I imported it into Cura and rotated it 180 degrees to have the flat side down. Worked like a charm! For the hell of it I also clicked on "Lay-Flat" although not needed. It rotated the "carrot" sideways to line up one of the edges on the X-axis which then results in non-symmetrical printing. I think the "Lay-flat" command should not affect the rotational axis.
