  1. Arrived, assembled and tested yesterday. Lovely, smooth bottomed ABS prints
  2. I had a twitter conversation with the UM guys. Looks like the ETA of the UM1 heated bed is July.
  3. Hi Mark, I do all my slicing in Cura but then send the gcode off to OctoPrint http://octoprint.org/ running on a Raspberry Pi (but you can install it on any Linux or Windows machine with the right python libraries). OctoPrint is awesome as it has a very fully feature webUI which (if you know how to port forward securely) you can make available over the internet. It also has good webcam support which gives a live view of the print plus takes snapshots every time the z-axis changes and creates a time lapse video of your print. I know Cura has this feature as part of the print menu but the ability to manage the print online is a good bonus for Octoprint (also you can get rid of the watermark which annoys me a little in Cura). Hope this all works well with your UM2! Danny
  4. Happy Corner Relegation!!! Unfortunately my wife has made me move the Ultimaker to the garage  but now I can run the printer 24/7 without annoying anyone...YAY! Before After
  5. First thing that came to mind is a ballerina for my daughter :-) Might print one anyway!
  6. I like it but it is far too...2D. All the motion is in one plane. We should try and go for motion in all dimensions if possible. Perhaps we could all print small modular replicas of the Ultimaker frame (easy to get from the CAD files) then make stuff move inside. Stack these up to make a modular wall?
  7. If you want it to be mechanical, perhaps we could design separate box or window which has standardised geared outputs and inputs. Then inside design something cool that moves. Ideas are already buzzing in my head...or that might be the caffeine. Either way, so much potential!
  8. It was night time :-) 10:50pm To be honest they have shown that dimmed lights help with creativity http://www.psmag.com/blogs/news-blog/dim-lighting-sparks-creativity-60437/
  9. Would it be possible to bolt on a secondary uController with 2 stepper motor drivers and intercept the gcode somehow? Or split the gcode up and send it to two usb com ports and use the PC to synchronise? Also are there enough hot end heater connections and thermocouple connections on the main board?
  10. Hmmm might be an interesting hackerspace project , I would love to see a more rigid design UM frame (say Al extrusion) with beefier stepper motors and a 4 bowden tube setup (one from each corner). Would look epic . Shame the software wouldn't integrate the models though. Edit: or is it just the extruder driving?
  11. Ian - Are those to stop accidental button presses? Also what material, looks like natural PLA.
  12. Nice one Daid! :-) Can't wait. Maybe my incorrectly ordered 2x reels of ABS could come in useful at some point hehe. Do we have any idea on timescales? I appreciate it might be a bit early for that though.
  13. As a new UM Owner I have noticed a couple of things: In Cura there is the possibility of selecting up to 4 hot ends The existing UM has holes for a 4 bowden tube/hot end set up. Does this mean that theoretically one could use up to 4 hot ends and print 4 materials? I had a good search on Google and the forums but no joy. Forgive my ignorance if I am way off base here. Danny
  14. That's the ultimaker robot and was my first print. It's attached to the top as a hood ornament :-D
  15. Hi Ultimaker team, I have submitted a store support ticket but I think with all the Ultimaker 2 hoohaa you guys have been a bit busy. I incorrectly ordered 2x reels of ABS (one white and one black) where they should have been 2x reels of PLA (one white and one black). I would like to RMA them and swap them for the PLA versions. They are unopened as I realised my mistake before ripping open the packaging :-D. Could someone from the shop support team please reply either here or to my ticket? Thanks in Advance Danny
  16. Agreed. I would love to see that upgrade direct from the UM team instead of an end user hack. It's the only thing missing from my UM1.
  17. Dude I'm in your shoes (3 week old Ultimaker 1) but honestly no one should be upset about the Ulitmaker 2 coming out. The UM1 does almost everything the UM2 does and is more tweakable (and cheaper)! Though I have to admit the new extruder and hot end look lovely . Also remember that the UM guys have vowed to keep updating the UM1 so its far off from being a dead platform. Stop worrying about it and get printing! Good Luck, Danny
  18. Hi All, I'm Danny from Cambridge in the UK. Just bought my first Ultimaker and have finally gotten it printing pretty well, after some help from the forums! I bought my Ultimaker Classic/Original/1 like 2 weeks before Ultimaker 2 announcement but after reading all the information I still think I would go for the Ultimaker Original even now. It's cheaper, I know you get all the lovely case and fancy screen but honestly this doesn't matter to me as my printer will be in the garage. It's for tinkerers like me. After a couple of weeks 3d printing I have realised you need to get your hands dirty with this hobby and the original Ulitmaker is suited for that. Basic specifications are the same and the Ultiamker Original has been shown to print at obscene accuracy and quality! I don't think this kind of 3d printing will ever be completely consumer friendly, again this suits the Ultimaker Original. To be honest I could easily see myself purchasing another Ultimaker in the future (1 printer is so not enough!) so who knows I might get an Ultimaker 2! Another question I had was about Ultimaker meetups around the UK? Do you guys get involved in this kind of thing? I am a member of Cambridge http://makespace.org, Cambridge's only hackerspace/fablab which has bookable rooms for meetups if that would be useful. They don't have an Ultimaker (yet! ) but have a Replicator 2X and an UP! printer. Finally I would like to say I am glad to have joined the community and look forward to lots of printing! Danny
  19. OK so here are some results of the short belt tightening. The companion cube on the left is the one I mentioned I was printing in my last post, I then tightened the short belts and printed the one on the right. Top infil looks much better with belts tightened. Sides look amazing, this is 0.2mm layer height and it looks injection molded! Bottom shows better infill, you can't see the "honeycomb" inside with the belts tightened. All in all very pleased with the improvements. Nearly there!
  20. After seeing more information about Ultimaker2 I think I am safe in the ownership of an Ultimaker Classic. I'm far more of a tinkerer which suits the original ultimaker I think. It is great to see the company pushing the design towards the consumer market and will ultimately benefit all of us. Excited to see the uptake! Good job guys
  21. Thanks gr5, new to forums I am doing a print right now so can't tighten up the short belts but will once it's finished. looking at it while it is running, the X-motor belt looks slightly loose so will make sure to get that tight. I also increased the retraction speed to 45 which seems to have help the blobbing issue when it is moving between print areas.
  22. 2 week old Ultimaker  As a few others on here I am pretty disappointed actually. It was a major decision for me to go for the Ultimaker and would have appreciated a bit more "heads-up" warning, at least for the community around the Ultimaker which drives its success. I may have chosen to buy the Ultimaker 1 anyway but the option would have been nice. Will you be significantly dropping the Ultimaker 1 price after this announcement? Typically with other electronics, the price of the original product gets dropped before the announcement of another iteration. Some of the moderator comments suggest they will be contact very recent purchasers of the old unit, I would like to be involved in that if possible.
  23. Pride of place next to my office desk. Lighting required so I can procrastinate watching my prints :-)
