    Thanks so much guys. With the video and the assembly manual, I think I have everything I need. I'm going to give it a go tonight.

    Re: bearings. Misumi doesn't sell the value bearings in North America so I have the regular ones. They come package in a plastic bag inside a box, and there is actually a small pool of oil in the bag, so it's a lot of oil. I'm going to try following the Misumi instructions - degrease the oil and then apply lithium grease.

  2. I received my Misumi LHFSW12 bearings. The first thing I noticed is that the bearings are covered in oil. This concerned me, because I understand that lubrication can cause the bushing to slide instead of roll along the rail causing the very problem I am facing.

    So I did a little googling and found a Misumi spec sheet on the bushing. https://us.misumi-ec.com/pdf/fa/2012/p1_0265.pdf. This document says that the oil is Anti-Rust oil, and recommends degreasing the oil, applying Lithium soap based grease to the ball rows immediately, and then every 6 months. I am obviously not going to take apart the machine every 6 months to grease the bearings, but ignoring that, did other people apply grease the bearings before installing? Am I misreading something?

  3. So, I did the following:

     

    • Sprayed the bearings and rods with WD40
    • Exercised the bearings on the rods (up/down about 10mm) for 10mins each
    • Sprayed the bearings and rods with degreaser
    • Let degreaser work for 5 minutes
    • Rinsed the bearings and rods with hot water
    • Dried the bearings and rods with hair dryer
    • Exercised the bearings on the rods (up/down about 10mm) for 10 mins each

     

    Then I repeated all of those steps again 2 more times.

    Unfortunately, my bearings are still jamming on reverse. I think there is some improvement, but I'm tired after doing this several hours, so I'm going to break down and order the Misumi bearings.

  4. Hi @balden,

    My experience is essentially identical to yours:

     

    • 14 month old UM2 with UM2+ upgrade installed 3 months ago
    • Bearings jam when reversing slowly. Can be overcome with force
    • Jam seems to be avoided by torquing the bearings, or running them horizontally

     

    For the community's benefit, I have uploaded a video showing the jamming that occurs about 10mm after a slow reversal (which is where the layer skipping is happening) -

    I WD40'd them. I don't have degreaser, but I'll go to the store and get some now. Its going to be a long day...

  5. Hi @balden thanks for the commentary. I very nearly ordered the Misumi bearings yesterday. At least the US Misumi site allows individuals to register and order - there is a company field to fill in but you can just write whatever you want there. It's still shipping to the address you provide. The problem for me is that I live in Canada and after exchange rate, taxes, shipping, brokerage fees (they use UPS to ship) it is going to cost me $100 for the two bearings. So today I am going to try cleaning and exercising the bearings really good. If that fails, I'll just have to eat the cost.

    For a long time, I have experienced a singular layer showing under-extrusion in a print. See image below of the same part printed twice, the error occurring both times:

    Some troubleshooting information:

     

    • The "layer error" occurs only sometimes (~50% chance) when printing the same part (from the same gcode file) multiple times. It has been getting more frequent lately (used to be ~10% chance). It is not an error in the model.
    • The "layer error" occurs at around (but not exactly) the same Z-position (+- 1mm) between different prints.
    • The "layer error" has different severities - sometimes it presents as a minor flaw, and sometimes it is quite serious (as in the photos above). Sometimes it causes the part to easily split along the underextruded layer

     

    I don't have a camera setup on my printer so I can't say for sure what is the cause. However, my best guess is that the bed is dropping too far when transitioning between layers. This suggests maybe there is some problem with the Z-screw or something related to the Z-screw. I have made sure there is plenty of the green lubrication gel on the screw.

    Does anyone recognize this problem? Any advice for correcting this problem?

  7. I was having persistent problems with PLA warping and pulling off the print bed when printing large parts.  I tried (individually, and in combinations):

    - raising nozzle temperature

    - raising print bed temperature

    - slow first print layer

    - thicker first print layer

    - disable fans for several layers

    - glue stick

    - releveling print bed

    - clean print bed with rubbing alcohol

    But I couldn't get a perfect result without any warping.  Until now.  Geert's salt method works amazing.  Using it, I can drop the nozzle and print bed temperatures back to normal - which also improves print quality.  I used it on a 9 hour print (that I had previously repeatedly aborted and restarted due to warping), and it printed flawlessly.

  8. Thanks guys, and thanks for the photo to point out the spacer. As far as I can tell, The pulley for that spacer isn't one of the ones that is grinding. That belt seems to be relatively centered, so I am not sure that adjusting that spacer will help.

    What I have done for now is manually pushed on the belts to recenter them on the pulleys and cleaned away the black dust. There is some possibility that when I installed the 2+ kit, the pulleys got pushed out of center and just stayed there ever since. I will be printing over the next few days and will report back if the problem persists.

    @Dim3nsioneer - thanks. I'll contact shop3D.ca and see if they have the grub screw I'm missing.

  9. Oh, I see. The black motor mount with 4 horizontal cylindrical posts (each of which has a screw running through it) that set the distance between the motor and the left wall. So, in my case, the belt seems to grind on the right side of the belt, so that I might need to increase the length of those 4 cylindrical posts so that the pulley moves a little to the right. Those posts sit right up against the motor, and also I have a fully enclosed UM2+ (full acrylic enclosure) so I am thinking that heat might be an issue for a printed part, at least in PLA.

    On the other hand, I did not have this issue before I installed the 2+ upgrade, and these motors, pulleys, and belts were not changed, so that I think it might just be something I can adjust - because I must have misaligned it upon reinstallation.

    @SandervG do you have any thoughts?

  10. Look in the back left corner of your printer, right above the stepper. There you will see a rather long black spacer. Dim3nsioneer is suggesting that you print a shorter version of that to push the pulley out from the wall a little bit, to center the belt better.

  11. That's why I printed myself spacers with adjusted length so the pulleys stay where they don't grind.

     

     

    You defiantly need spacers and since that are already like that, make sure to replace then, then you wont need to deal with them anymore. Just buy them from a trusted resource.

     

    Thanks guys. Can you explain what these spacers are, or better yet show me with a picture of your machine or point to a print file that I can download? If I know what make, I'm pretty good with Fusion360 and I can make it.

  12. I have done a little more sleuthing.  I ran my fingers along the edges of the belts to see which ones had black dust along them.  

    On the right side, the vertical belt from the motor had the most.  Not sure if that's static cling though.  A picture:

    On the left side, the vertical belt from the motor also had the most.   Pictures of the bottom and top of the vertical belt appear to show that the bottom of the belt is not centered on the pulley.   Maybe its grinding on the edge of the pulley?

    I am going to clean up the black dust, try to center the belts on the pulleys, and see if more dust forms.

One more comment - in the last step of the 2+ upgrade (Aligning the axles: https://ultimaker.com/en/resources/19953-aligning-the-axles), it tells you to "Loosen the 2 pulleys on the back X axle". Unfortunately, only my back left pulley included a screw in the hole of the axle. It seems my back right pulley never had a screw in it - so I was unable to tighten or loosen it. I just carried on based on the left screw only.

    This is a picture of my back right pulley. There's no tightening screw.

    Is there supposed to be a tightening screw in the back right axle? Is it possible that this is causing the issue? If yes, can anyone advise the size of the screw or where I can get one? I think I am just past my warranty period.

  14. Hi Everyone,

    I have noticed just recently some black dust forming on top of the motors. I can only guess this is due to the belt grinding. I looked back at some old photos I had of the printer from a couple months back (before I installed the 2+ upgrade), and it wasn't there, so I'm thinking it has something to do with my reassembly after installing the 2+ upgrade. Does anyone have advice for how to resolve this issue?

  15. Success! I printed mating M75x1.5 (from Fusion360) first using the 2mm offset and fillet (for both threads) as suggested - which was too tight, then changed both to 2.5mm and it fits nicely. I had to clean the threads a bit by rotating the parts together back and forth (a metal brush as someone suggested probably would have worked). No supports. Nice fit - no wobble, and very strong connection.
