  1. Hi guys, loaded the new Cura, rebooted the computer, gone into Cura setup my machine and preferences in the system, loaded a part to check and test out, and it sits there saying "preparing to slice..."  And going nowhere.

Are you on Windows? At first launch after Windows install, Cura is sometimes unable to connect to the engine. This can cause the slicing to remain at "preparing to slice". Restarting Cura should correct the connection problem.

  2. @SandervG is currently at Maker Faire Bay Area so I’m replacing him as the announcer of your favorite Ultimaker event :D

    Ultimaker Sessions

Our next meetup, on May 30th in FabLab ProtoSpace in Utrecht, is going to be a special one! We’re going to kick off a new concept: from now on the Ulti-Evenings will be known as Ultimaker Sessions.

We’re doing this because many of you have asked for Ulti-Evenings hosted nearer to you. That's why we’re now expanding these meetups globally, joining forces with our partners everywhere! We didn’t want to limit them to hosting sessions in the evening, so we've renamed it to 'Ultimaker Sessions'.

You’ll also meet community members from 3DGBIRE and Makershop tonight, who will be running the first Ultimaker Session pilots in the UK and France! We’ll expand the program to other countries with more partners as we go along.

  3. I found an interesting research paper posted online about microfluidics research (using extremely small fluid channels for research, to isolate and examine single cells for example) where they examined the possibility of creating microfluidics systems using FDM, specifically an Ultimaker 2 printer. Figured I'd share it with the rest of you all - it's not really my field, but seriously cool either way:

  4. Joined the steam group, though I play few games on steam, because OSX. My 360 and Wii are gathering dust too now that I have a PS4.

I'm waiting to see what The Division playerbase is going to be like; if it survives the first few months I'll probably take that up. I'm still considering picking up Destiny somewhere along the way to see what everyone's so excited about, but I'm more of a BF/CoD gamer and never really got into Halo online either. I did play the Battleborn open beta this weekend and that was a lot of fun. I figure either that or Overwatch will be my team shooter of choice when they're out.

  6. Hey everyone! I know, I know, this is usually 's job, but today I get to do the honors! Don't fret, we'll return to your regularly scheduled community manager soon ;).

The Olsson Block is currently a free gift with every new Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2 Extended we sell, and during that time we're running these 3D printing contests so those of you who already own a printer also have a chance of receiving an Olsson Block! And not just any Olsson Block, this is the special edition set that we're giving away.

The special edition contains not just the regular set of nozzles that comes with the standard Olsson Block set, but also adds the big 1.0mm nozzle for super fast prints. So when you win you get:

    • The Olsson Block itself
    • 0.25mm nozzle
    • 0.4mm nozzle
    • 0.6mm nozzle
    • 0.8mm nozzle
    • 1.0mm nozzle
    • and a screwdriver and socket to swap nozzles

    CHALLENGE

A proton and a neutron walk into a bar. The proton says "I think I lost an electron. Help me look for it!" The neutron asks, "Are you sure?" The proton replies, "Yes, I'm positive."

Sorry, I can only tell really terrible chemistry jokes, because all the good ones Argon.

    :p

You've probably guessed it - for this week's contest we're going really small. Atomically small. We want you to print molecules, as tiny as possible!

Grab excite's Molecule Construction Set here:

    https://www.youmagine.com/designs/molecule-construction-set

Pick a molecule to create out of these atoms and start cracking to print it as small as you can. As always, the rule is that you have to print with an 0.4mm nozzle - apart from that, anything goes. Upload it in the Print section and show it off here! We'll choose a winner based on smallest size combined with print quality, but we do give major extra credit for picking more complex molecules and making them aesthetically pleasing. My H2O molecule, shown here as an example in a glass of H2O, is neither small nor complex so it's probably not a winner ;)

    IMG_0550.thumb.JPG.d85170eb6d7a58378f33a7ef76189c13.JPG

The other rules of the contest are pretty simple. Please read them carefully.

    RULES

    • We know how you all love hacking and modifying, so we have only one guideline: it must be printed on an Ultimaker, with an 0.4mm nozzle. Besides that.. everything goes!
    • Entries must be uploaded in the Print section. (Fill out your settings if you want. The winner agrees to share his settings at the end of the week).
    • Share the link and a picture of your upload in this thread.
    • Everyone can participate in every contest, but you can only win once.
    • Photoshop is not allowed.
    • You can participate until Sunday midnight CEST.

    EXTRA INFORMATION

    • We'll choose a winner primarily based on size and print quality of the molecule - but complexity and aesthetics may sway our votes.
    • We will announce each weeks winner on Monday in the corresponding thread on our forum, on our Twitter feed and Instagram!

WHAT DO I NEED TO PRINT?

Grab excite's Molecule Construction Set here.

    Upload your entry here.

And share your entry with us here below.

Can't wait to see your entries!

  7. Oh, that's right @jameshs, I didn't think about the granite floor being a huge heat sink. Good point!

Thanks @LePaul - I only have an Ultimaker 2 Go right now so R2 didn't become very big :)

Took me more than an hour to cleanly remove all the support; after printing it was just one straight blob down to the buildplate. I probably should've sliced him up into pieces and then put the parts together afterwards instead of printing the entire model in place with support, but it was a good learning experience :)

For an un-tuned, straight out of the box printer I thought the print looked damn fine though.

  8. Hey everyone! I'm new here on the forum - as you can see by that Team Ultimaker badge to the right over there, I work at Ultimaker. I'm still a n00b, just started here two months ago as part of the marketing team. You might have seen my avatar on a blogpost here or there.

So quick intro, I'm an engineering dropout (both electrical and computer) turned online marketer. I'm new to the 3D printing scene, less so to the general geekery of making. Some examples of recent side projects are my DIY sous vide machine and my festival boomcase (boombox + suitcase = you get the idea). In the past few years I'd often seen Ultimakers over at friends who work in automotive, mechanical, or industrial design fields, and they absolutely loved them so that's what inspired me to apply here.

During my first week with a printer I went crazy, making the usual geeky stuff - lightsaber, Pikachu, R2-D2, Link, a Slytherin crest, etc etc etc. But fun as it was to decorate the house with that stuff, none of it was functional.

And then I had a bright idea.

I live in a shared house with two friends, and we have a landlord who does not believe in the concept of preventative maintenance. Or any, really. Which was not usually a huge problem, until a 'plumber' he hired to fix some leaky pipes managed to destroy our shower drain. Destroy it so badly, that he 'fixed' it by caulking the drainpipe directly to the remains of the trashed flange. With no functional trap left in the drain we had a direct line from our shower to the sewer. You can imagine the stench. Landlord then refused to do anything, because the house is so old that replacing the drain would mean replacing the original granite floor in the entire bathroom.

    foto1.thumb.jpg.27b9cc87eb13f543487de471cf5d49ca.jpg

But now, armed with my Ultimaker, I figured I should be able to fix this.

I started by doing some caulkwork of my own: I jammed a short piece of PVC pipe into the drain and caulked it in place. That was going to be the new bottom end of my trap.

    foto2.thumb.jpg.ed219124be3e3ac630ef158fd2fe7cc5.jpgfoto3.thumb.jpg.f19236585d3bf1da17b68d54380830f5.jpg

Yes that's hideous, but please note that I never said I was good at doing any repairs myself ;). Anyways, I went to tinkercad and started designing. A flat cylinder with some boxes cut out of it, combined with a hollow cylinder - and my drain cover was done!

    foto4.thumb.jpg.3488a6d4c875b133b7ac70dc686994bd.jpg

The hollow cylinder would be the top end of the trap so water gets locked in between the 3D printed drain cover and the PVC pipe, cutting off the foul air from the sewer. It took a few iterations to get the design right - first my size measurements were way off, then my walls were too thin and it wasn't watertight, then I cracked one during my first pressure test (i.e. i accidentally stepped on it), and then I overextended the cylinder and water wouldn't drain fast enough so I flooded the bathroom.

    foto5.thumb.jpg.5d37d308c8a06b4dc88861636fc9a280.jpg

But version 5 was good enough to keep using. And now we've been able to enjoy a bathroom that smells like rainbows and unicorns (well, it's all relative) again for the first time in a year!

    foto6.thumb.jpg.43c6b9fa36fbc781a4207b6578cf4d5e.jpg

We're 3 weeks in now and it's working absolutely fine. I'm going to print my design in ABS next, because I think that it's theoretically possible to get the water in the shower hot enough that it could deform my PLA print. But apart from that, I'd say my first functional 3D print was a great success :D

TL;DR: Engineering dropout designs and prints a drain cover and is quite pleased with himself. Tuition well spent.
