Uri Alon is a scientist, and talks about science here, but haven't we all been there in a way?
In life in general, in design, art, ... you sometimes simply get stuck in the cloud.

Hi,
I have this little question around this cutlery tool that I'm creating.
https://ultimaker.com/en/community/19729-a-cutlery-design-concept
This concept has some kind of click system that binds two elements together, but right now I still have to tweak it afterwards (after printing) to really make the two elements click.
Is there maybe a way to generate this kind of thingy right of the printer?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in joining this little project.
I made this cutlery design concept that maybe has some potential but atm I'm looking for a 3D artist that might convert or scan this into a full 3D design.
https://ultimaker.com/en/community/19729-a-cutlery-design-concept
The reason I ask is because I created these "flat" designs that I afterwards mold into a spoon. I still encounter some stl issues when trying to recreate this piece fully in 3D.
If anyone would want to participate, don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks a lot in advance and cy later :-)

Hi all,
I have had a much needed period of rest on this one, I have been working like crazy for this one for a few weeks now with a whole table full of concepts ...
But I crystallized two of them with some more pictures to explain them some more.
one is a concept based around 3 elements where you slide in the knife in between the two elements. Together you use it as a spoon/fork, and when you separate the two you have a knife and fork.
the other concept is based around 2 elements, that click together. Same deal really, as one it is a spoon/fork, and separate you have the knife/fork.
I'm still looking forward to some feedback around these concepts, and I still have a boatload of questions really. But I'll put them in the tips and tricks/collab section.

Hi all,
a week later and some major changes has occurred.
I created two other concepts:
one is created with three elements, while the other is made with only two elements.
I'll post more details later but this is a spoon, fork and knife all together in one kit.
I was wandering around some questions though.
Is it possible to generate somewhat of a decent knife with pla?
and does anyone know how to generate buttons that click together right of the printer? I managed to do so, but not before altering the base element after the print.
I'll post these questions also in the tips section.
thanks a lot and cy all later.

Hi all,
I was dealing with a cutlery design a while ago, and it kinda kick started me into 3D printing to see what I can come up with.
Finally, after some time passing by I think I can find some kind of closure on that one after producing these results:
http://timguldentopsbe.webhosting.be/?portfolio=oval-cutlery-design-concept
https://ultimaker.com/en/community/prints/2888-oval
Not that it is finished, it's still in a concept phase, but I'm rather pleased with the empirical results so far.
The funny thing is that it involves 3D printing, and some craftsmanship, some manual actions as well to get the spoon function in there, besides having the fork and knife option.
I was really troubled with adding supports and therefore creating a rough surface, resulting into this combo of printing and moulding the piece to generate a smooth surface and way less post processing.
I am prolly going to fine tune this some more, but personally I really like where this is going.
What are your opinions/suggestions about this concept design?
I'm really looking forward to some feedback around this one.
Thanks a lot in advance and kind regards.

amazing,

Hi all,
don't mind me, I'm in a creative spree at the moment
As soon as I picked up a canvas I wanted to do something with the frame itself. It always felt so limiting to present something 2D within that frame only, so the idea popped up on changing the frame itself, and let light become the painter/painting trough reliefs, crackles.
3D printing did inspire me to do such work, after experimenting with small and larger pla plates bending it into a 3D sculpture.
more variants can be found here: http://timguldentopsbe.webhosting.be/?portfolio=crackle

So I went to work some more and this is the result so far:
I think that one is finished.

I feel ya lepaul. My parents had 3 cats that had a car crash, all of them, within 3 months :(
reminds me of an idea, why not build or buy an artist cube where inside there is room for the ashes, and on the outside you paste pictures?

Hi all,
Do you know by any chance sizopreg?
I stumbled upon this new material while looking for large pla plates: it's a bio composite between pla and jute, developed in the Netherlands by Zwartz.
Yesterday I got me some samples and it turns out that it has the special gift like any pla that comes out of the printer.
And of course I went to work with it as soon as I got it.
I put the kettle on the stove to have some boiling water, dropped it on the plate and started modeling it in a more abstract way, resulting in this piece so far:
http://timguldentopsbe.webhosting.be/?portfolio=bend
I'm prolly going to work on it some more today,
but this shows promise towards divers fields, both in design and art there are many possibilities without the need for expensive modeling tools, just some boiled water does the trick :-)

thanks for the tip,
I'm pretty new at this and white is almost everything I know (except for the one grey filament that came with the start .
I tried colorfabb white and um white, but now that I know that colors do matter for better print quality I'll maybe try something else.
-
Thanks Labern,
I'm almost out of filament and ready to order some new spools. But now I'm not really sure what to pick really.
So, for better prints I should pick grey and spray paint them afterwards?
my options are UM spools or filament from colorfabb.
-
the brim worked out more then ok :-)
thanks again, the print was very fine, almost a line, to present this human figure:

thanks for the feedback Labern. I'll look into that but first I'll try the brim option.
so far so good with that one.
btw is color that important? Sure I prefer white but if there is an easy color that prints better I would prefer that one. I can always spray paint them afterwards.
-
oops, forgot all about the brim option.
I'll try that one.
Many thanks niyoki!
ps these came out pretty good:

Hi all,
the other day I was printing these figures but most of the time the nozzle clears away everything it has printed so far, generating this one big mess.
Is there something that can be done to prevent this? I'm thinking about adjusting printing speed settings so that the filament has more time to glue itself on the heated bed.
Or are there other possibilities perhaps?
Any advise is more then welcome :-)
ps printing with pla, I already adjusted the actual printing speed to 30mm/sec

I'm almost out of filament, and I'm thinking about getting some spools of white and maybe a transparent one as well to try that one out for the first time.
Is there any difference between the two? I worked with both of them and no problem with either one, except for the feeling that the flow is slightly better with ultimaker. But I could be mistaken.
I never tried a transparent filament yet.
can anyone help with this little dilemma?
thanks a lot!
-
auch, sorry to hear that :/
maybe you can print some kind of hollow piece/memorial where you put the ashes in during printing, before the printer closes the print?
That way the piece and the ashes become one sorta speak.
-
Just like gr5 said,
load your stl file into cura, and then save the gcode into the sdcard.
put the sdcard into the printer and start printing.
-
thanks for the tip, i'll maybe try that one.
-
you are prolly right cloakfiend.
For instance this little idea: square variations (a human touch) comes more close on what I want to do now, but on a grander scale.
So I found this site where they sell larger pla plates that I hopefully can heat up in some way and generate adjustments instead of printing a 15cm x 15cm plate.

Hi all,
Since the new year I have this little 3D printing period, and the latest work is 3D inspired from the other works I made, but didn't come out of the printer itself.
Sure I could print those modules out, but I had these boxes with those cardboard elements still lying around.
And one of my latest print (mikado) inspired me to do pretty much the same thing, only now with these small rectangles.
In short for years I have been interested in turning a 2D canvas into a 3D sculpture, or mess around with the frame itself instead of just painting the canvas.
This is an attempt to do so with small modules (85x55x1mm)
making two elements click together right of the print

Thanks for the replies :-)
I'm not that experienced yet unfortunately, but I'm trying to get more experience out of every print
This one is a spoon, fork, and knife. Together you use it as a spoon and separate you have a fork and knife. So it can't be glued together and it really has to really click and stick together as a whole.
I'm printing this one flat yeah, afterwards I drop it in some boiling water and mold the curve in.
a slight overhang on the sides, yeah, that might pull it off. Many thanks for the suggestion! I'll try it next time.
