I have an S5 that's been running well for about 2 years now.  Recently, the printer has messed up on two different print jobs with the same action.  After 30mins to an hour of printing, the print head appears to have traveled behind the Print Core Switch bracket and gets stuck causing a horrible noise.  Eventually, an Out of Bounds movement error is displayed which forces a reboot.  I have experienced this on two separate prints that have run flawlessly in the past.  The only new thing on the printer is the updated firmware:  7.0.2, since the last time running these files.  One strange thing that happens is that the active filament feeder grinds a spot like its stuck and then retracts it from the head.

     

    I just reset the printer back to default and will try to run another test print.

     

    Has anyone else experienced this and by some random chance is this a bug with firmware 7.0.2?

    The most likely culprits (in my experience) are:

    - the pins in the print head connecting to the printcore are dirty, dust and grease can make this happen, just clean them with some alcohol and a q-tip.

    - the cable could have developed breaks and might need to be replaced.

    - the cable can start to move, it is claimed in by the print head but wear can make it start moving. A bit of tape around the cable right where it is clamped could stop this.

     

    Given the recent change of printcore after never changing it the first one would really be my bet.

    I checked the pins and attempted to clean them, but the issue persisted across all four of my UM print cores and between two different print head assemblies.  One of these print head assemblies is brand new.

     

    As for the cable, it may be the issue, but I checked it for continuity across all pins and it did not indicate a break.  Each wire of the cable also measured the same resistance, so I am not sure if it could be a short or not.  Either way, I will try to source a new cable to see if it fixes it.

I have an UMS5 at work and we recently had an unknown breakdown.  Long story short, someone messed something up which resulted in me having to source a new print head.  The new head came in and was simple enough to swap out when following the videos online.  After the replacement, I ran the machine through its calibration modes to get it ready to run.  Everything came out well enough without any major issue.  Today, I loaded up a Benchy print and left it to do its thing.  I came back to the printer and it had error-ed out after 18 minutes, displaying a motor communication fault.  The printer was rebooted and stated that one of the print cores was not loaded.  (The cores had not been touched since the failed print).  I tried to unload/load the core and it would not recognize them.  Every once in awhile it would show one loaded after a reboot, but would eventually show no core in either the 1st or 2nd bay.  I did a factory reset from the menu and it did not make a difference.  I suspected there may be a connection issue in the print cable so i disconnected and reconnected the head, but nothing.  I even tried hooking up the old head and it did the same thing.  The cores do not seem to be an issue because I ran all 4 different cores through with the same result.  Is it possible the cable it bad or a connection issue on the main board itself?  I have not checked that, since I do not have a security torx driver in the office.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    But this is about the print profiles. The comparison lies in the fact that bout MarkForged and Ultimaker controles the whole supply chain. Printer, Fillement and Software so from that point i think its an resenebole comparison.

     

    The problem with your statement is the assertion that there is a magical profile that will work on all models for the same filament.  In practically every form of automated manufacturing, the "profile" changes or must be adapted to meet the needs of the end product.  When I print on my S5, I end up printing most things out of black UM Tough PLA.  For every model, I start with the basic profile and slightly tweak according to what I want to achieve.  These tweaks are generally:  wall counts, infill %/patterns, top/bottom patterns, etc.  Never have I had to mess with the core of the profiles like:  fan settings, bed/nozzle temps, encoders step values or anything you often find discussed in forums like this.  I understand that people do not want to spend all of their time tweaking, neither do I, especially since I use mine in a professional environment.  When I "tweak" the profile, it takes all of about 1-2 minutes before i'm done and its off to the printer.  In my 6-9 months with this printer, I have had only half a dozen, or less failed prints.  These failures were not attributed to a poor profile as much as they were multiple models with long print times and in difficult material.

     

    Contrary to other posts on here, my S5 is about as close to plug and play as I have ever seen.  My time on Cura is often shorter than the boot time when I open it for the first time.  On top of that, the majority of my prints are turned on right before I leave the office and will not get done till sometime the next day.  Great results almost everytime.

I have printed some with PP and can confirm the issues with PP.  Normally, PP does not adhere to the glass well, even with glue.  When it does, it may warp along the bed contact area.  One trick we have tried is to mask the bed off with packing tape, the clear kind.  We found that some clear packing tape is made from PP and this allows for good adhesion.  Its not a perfect solution, but it may help.

    The easier route may be to physically test your models according to some standard.  Where I work, we occasionally perform tensile tests on specific plastic samples for chemical compatibility.  I have been able to test small parts on the same tester in order to get an idea on the characteristics of the model or material.

     

    Are you wanting to vet out your model in simulation and then use the printed part or are you wanting to try and incorporate the gyroid fill into a manufactured part?

     

     

  7. Has anyone else had an issue with some of the plugin functionality in the new release?  The Autodesk Inventor Integration does not appear to work for me.  I tried re-installing CURA and nothing then I tried uninstalling the plugin but it spins for more than an hour.  Is there any word on this if it is stable or not?  I can export out of inventor but the integration previously available in CURA was much better for my workflow.

  9. UMS5 +CURA 3.6.0

     

    Does anyone know if CURA can handle more than one model at on the build-plate but with only one touching?

     

    I have a part where I want to extrude the main body in one color of ToughPLA and then another section in a 2nd color of ToughPLA.  My part will have the base model on the build-plate and the 2nd model centered over the first but at about 2mm above.  The two models are designed such that they nest together, so there are not any gaps or voids.  The issue I am having is that CURA will not let me move the 2nd model above the build-plate.  Every time I try, it snaps the model back to Z0.  I can work around this by having the void in the 1st continue through the model, but it results in much more of the 2nd material being used.  I assume I'm missing something since the sample print included with my S5 seems to depict what I am trying.

    @SandervG We greatly appreciate the update and look forward to the new glass plate.  Our original plate has suffered a little from harsh removals, so a new one will help a lot.
