  1. My problem with "Discard" is that the changes I made to Profile A will be discarded. So instead of Profile A having a wall count of 5 which I want, it will go back to 3. If I made 25 changes to Profile A like I have to do for the RC airplane prints, then I would lose all of them if I choose discard. But if I choose save they would all be applied to Profile X, which I don't want. My problem, I think, is that I am trying to make a new profile the wrong way. In the profile drop down there is the option to create a new profile with the current settings/ overrides. This is greyed out. However if I go to the Mange Profiles window, I can duplicate a profile and rename it. I like using the default "Dynamic 0.16" profile as my starting point. So if I duplicate it and name it "Airplane Profile A", and swap into Airplane Profile A, I have the Dynamic 0.16 settings to start with. I notice that the "Update Profile" selection is still greyed out in the Profile drop down. However if I make a change to Airplane Profile A, the update profile selection becomes available. If I make my 25 changes to Airplane Profile A and then update it, I can swap back to another profile without the dreaded "keep/Discard" choice appearing. I just needed to learn a bit better how Cura works. So now I have to get a large pot of coffee brewing, delete all the profiles I previously made, and start all over with Dynamic 0.16. Going to be a long night. Thanks for the response to my post. You are the only one who seems to be a regular responder to all our questions and I think all of us on this forum very much appreciate your help. Thanks again.
  2. I am confused about saving changes to a profile. If I make changes to a profile and then switch to another profile, a list pops up showing the changes that have been made to the current profile, and asking if I want to keep the changes or discard them. The explanation is: "Would you like keep these changed settings after switching profiles? Alternately, you can discard the changes to load the defaults from ( the profile you are going to ). So, what I want to do is save the changes that I made to the profile that I was in, where I made all the changes, then jump to the new profile that I selected from my list. I do not want to change anything in the new profile. I just want to save the changes in the profile in which I made them. But I seem to be given only two choices. Either I can apply the changes to the new profile I am going to, which I really don't want to do, or discard the changes and loose them in the profile I am in, which I don't want to do either. I want to keep the changes I made to the current profile I am was using, and change to a new profile without making any changes to the new profile. In the profile list window there is the option to "update with current settings/overrides" but this is greyed out. I assume that if I did update the profile my changes would be saved to the current profile and I could switch to a new profile without the dreaded "keep/discard" choice. So why is this action greyed out? All the options in this section ( to create a new profile from the current settings and also to discard changes) are greyed out. This is super irritating because I have to make a number of profiles to print RC airplanes. There are three profiles needed that have to be used for different parts of the plane. I am frustrated because when I change profiles and choose save changes it wrecks the profile I am going to and I have to painfully go through all the profile items and make all the changes for that specific profile again. What is the logic here? Why would I ever want to carry changes I made to one profile over to another one? I just want to save the changes, as you do in every other program on Earth. The "keep/discard" choice in Cura makes no sense.
  3. I have used Cura on this Mac since early version 3.1 and never had a problem upgrading to newer versions. Version 5.1 is the only one that is causing problems. I think it is something like the issue described in the support document above. For some reason the Mac is unable to check the file for malicious software so it blocks Cura from opening. My version of Cura 4.13.1 still works just fine. Version 5.1 will not open in any way including left click open or any other method. The Mac can't seem to check the file so it is blocked from opening.
  4. Found this after a search: https://support.ultimaker.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013828939--Ultimaker-Cura-can-t-be-opened-because-Apple-cannot-check-it-for-malicious-software I have an older version of the Mac OS (10.13.6, High Sierra) but I suspect it is the same problem. The Mac can't check the program so it won't open it. The work around shown in the help article doesn't work for me. Has this been addressed in the new Beta of Cura 5.1?
  5. So I run Cura on my Windows laptop and my desktop Mac. Both versions of Cura are older so I decided to update both computers to version 5.1. The laptop updated easily and runs 5.1 just fine. The Mac updated and opened the new version of Cura but then the OS flashed up the usual banner saying that this was a file downloaded from the internet and did I want it to open. I said yes and Cura disappeared and won't open at all when I try again. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Cura 5.1 three times now. Each time Cura opens and the Mac flashes up the internet file warning and each time I tell the Mac to open the file Cura disappears. I know the solution is don't use Macs but it is very convenient to have Cura installed on mine so I can work on files in the house. The laptop runs the printer out in the shop. Any other Mac users noticed this behaviour? I have run many versions of Cura on this Mac. Never a problem before. I've downloaded a lot of software. There is always the warning banner about a file from the internet but I have never seen this problem before. Maybe Apple should get with the current century. All software is downloaded from the internet these days. There are no nice little boxes with a CD in them anymore.
  6. It seems strange to me to offer a feature in your software package and then not support it. Perhaps this is the quirky world of open source software. I have looked at the Creality Wi-Fi box but it does everything via the cloud. There is a help file that shows how to upload a G-code file from Cura to the Creality Cloud using the Creality Cloud plugin but that involves a lot of uploading and downloading and doesn't seem be listed in Cura 5.1. It is there in my older Cura 4.13.1. Which leaves Octoprint as the only viable alternative. With Raspberry pi prices through the roof, even it you can get one, and all the hassles I have read about on forums in trying to get Octoprint to work I am not keen on going that route. Guess it is time to make the old Creality a door stop and buy a resin printer.
  7. Like F14Claude my SD card does not work and I have printed via USB from Cura for Years. However as I get larger prints and print times go up my Cura 4.10 started crashing more, leaving 12 hour prints hanging after 11.5 hrs. This got so frustrating that I quit using the printer. I was disappointed to read in this forum that Ultimaker was not supporting USB printing because of persistent bugs. Is this still the case? I am looking a Octoprint and other local servers but I just wish I could print dependably from Cura as I always have. Is there any improvement in the current versions of Cura? I am downloading version 5.1 to try again. Is there still no support for USB printing in Cura?
  8. The SD card reader on my printer broke the third time I used it so I have been printing via USB from my laptop ever since. Cura would crash occasionally but for the most part this worked well. Since upgrading to Cura version 4.13 this crashing has gotten worse. An 11 hour print stopped about 15 minutes short of finishing last night when Cura crashed again. I am surprised to hear that printing via USB is not supported. If I save the G-code to my hard drive I wonder if the whole job can be downloaded to the printer as opposed to spooling from the laptop through Cura? The card reader on this printer is part of the motherboard. I can buy another motherboard and replace it but I don't trust the card reader to last.
  9. Lake monsters. My flying boat was eaten by one. I was flying close to the surface minding my own business and suddenly the lake sprang up and ate the airplane right there in front of me. Water can be really hard when you smack it.
  10. Hi. The strong centre line and its branches are on the print. Not sure why, the don't line up with internal structure. The very faint lines are the ones I am curious about. They seem to be very wood grainish. Look like the surface of a plywood sheet. This certainly may be due to adaptive features at work. I will try a print with that turned off and see what happens. Planting model airplanes in trees is a time honoured tradition. That is why I always have a chain saw handy. I must admit that the more time I spend on Real Flight 8.0 on the computer, the fewer trees are endangered. Winter is slowly grinding to a close here so flying season is just around the corner. Better get this airplane printed and ready.
  11. This is a purchased set of plans from Eclipson and they ask that their files not be posted or shared anywhere so I will respect that. Adaptive Layers is turned on in the profile. Do you recommend that I turn that off? Eclipson recommends three profiles for their models, A, B, and C. Their plans specify the Cura settings for each profile, and show which parts are printed with which profile. I modified the Cura Dynamic profile for each one. The prints use no infill and no supports, just thin skins and internal structure to make them as light as possible.
  12. I am curious about marking on my prints that resemble tree rings. This is on thin wall prints for an RC airplane in Cura 4.8. The files print well but all of them have faint markings that are not on the files. I haven't see this before. The photo shows the markings ( the faint ones, the stronger lines are on the print file). They are faint so you will have to enlarge the photo to see them. I have never paid much attention to the patterns on the models in Cura in the preview screen. There are all kinds of surface markings in the preview screen look like moire patterns. Is it possible that some of these patterns have slipped through to the print? Or is this some sort of seam issue with settings in Cura?
  13. Well Duh. Yes it was set to brim. I set to none and it fits. Thanks a bunch. Completely missed that little detail when I reviewed the profile settings.
  14. I have run into the problem of trying to print large items that are close but not quite the full size of my build plate. My build area is 220mmX220mm. The model I am trying to print is circular and shows as 210mmX210mm in Cura. However Cura shows the model greyed out and will not slice it. Playing with the scaling function in Cura I can print it at 200mmX200mm but not 205mmX205mm. It will print at 203mmX203mm but not above that. So Cura is leaving 17mm on each side of the model as a reserve that is non-printable space. This seems excessive. I should be able to print my model full size at 210mmX210mm. A 10mm reserve is surely enough. I have checked my printer settings in Cura and the build surface is set to 220mmX220mm. I don't see anything in the settings that allows me to set a smaller unprintable space on the outside edges. Is there any way to do this?
  15. This "Wait for User" issue is driving be crazy. My printer is a Crealty CR20 using Cura 4.4.1 running under Windows 10 ver 1809 64 bit. This printer works well and has done hundreds of prints. I am trying to make a rotating tool holder. This is the biggest print I have ever done on this printer. It fills the build plate. The tool holder is in 3 parts. The top is full of holes and features and it printed perfectly. The base is solid, and the long print lines seem to have brought out this error. Every few minutes the printer stops with "Wait for User" showing in the printer's LED panel. Pushing the control knob starts the printer again. However a few minutes later it stops again, and again I have to push the control knob on the printer again to start the print. This continues throughout the print. It is impossible to live with, I can't leave the printer for more than a few minutes, and this is a long print job. I have read about this issue emerging with long print lines in a model. I tried lines and zigzag in the Cura profile for bottom layers and first layer. No change. This is a very frustrating issue. I have included a picture of the top part with holes ( no problem printing this ) and the bottom part that is solid and causing this "Wait for User" error. The log file is included as well. See the date 2020-02-24 for the log associated with the problem print. I really hope this can be resolved, and also really appreciate any help you can give me. cura.log
  16. Hi. I have the same problem with a Crealty CR20. It has a 220mm square build surface. For the first time on a large print I noticed that it is printing really close to the front edge. When I Autohome the print head the nozzle is about 4 mm forward of the build plate. The problem is the rear limit switch. It allows the build plate to move too far backwards when you do an Autohome. Manually moving the build plate forward to where I want it leaves the rear stop about 5mm forward of the limit switch. I loosened the mounting bolts on the limit switch to see if it would slide forward but it is not adjustable. So my only solution is to move my build surface as far foward as possible using the paper clips. This is only a problem for large prints that are close to the size of the build plate. Most of my prints are smaller. I have a question about this in to my vendor but no response yet.
  17. For the first time in a year of using Cura with a Crealty CR20 I am getting "Wait for User" errors during printing. The print head stops and waits for me to push the button on the printer and then starts again. It does this every few minutes. There are many threads about this on the forum. Lots of suggestions and theories. One that caught my eye is the observation that this problem seems to emerge when there are long straight print lines in the model. I am making a rotating tool organizer. It is the largest object I have ever printed on this printer. The top has lots of holes in it so no long lines. It printed perfectly. The base however is solid and has very long print lines and this is the situation in which I am getting the wait for user error. So if it is long print lines causing this, the obvious solution is to make them shorter. Either create interruptions in the geometry of the base, or use a base line pattern that is not straight. Cura offers Top/bottom Pattern and Bottom Pattern Initial Layer as lines, concentric and zigzag. It is set to lines in these prints. When I try concentric and zig zag as selections in Cura and slice the model there does not seem to be any difference shown in the Preview window of the print from that with lines. The print times all stay the same. Concentric offers a line in which you can enter numbers for polygons, and zig zag has that line for entering integers. I don't know how to use those features or what they do. So would Concentric or Zigzag create shorter line lengths in the base of the print? Which one would be the best to use? Or should I just add a few holes in the base to interrupt the long print lines?
  18. Thanks a bunch for this info. I will keep it handy in case I need it. So far 4.4.1 is behaving itself but if I do end up needing help I will start a new thread and post the log file.
  19. Hi. After a trouble-free year with several versions of Cura my 4.2 version crashed. I got it going again and it crashed again. I read this topic and searched for the log files where they are said to be on the Github link above. You are supposed to be able to access them in the Cura interface under Help - Show Settings ( no such menu item ), or create them using start-run-dxdiag-save output ( no such function running dxdiag ), or find them in Appdata\Cura\(Cura Version)\Cura.log ( no such entry ). I searched the whole computer for Cura.log with no result. I am using Windows 10. I think all these references are out of date. I gave up and upgraded my Cura 4.2 to 4.4.1. So far things are running nicely. But just in case, where do I find the log files for Cura 4.4.1 running under Windows 10 (64 bit version)?
  20. Hi. I am a new user and have Cura 4.2 running well, waiting for ver 4.4 to be released. I am printing small parts currently with a .4mm nozzle. They turn out well but in the interests of getting the most detail possible I would like to try a .2mm nozzle. I am using a .1mm line height and a 2 wall thickness in Cura. With a .2mm nozzle would I be able to use a .05 mm line height and 4 walls? Does the nozzle size have any relation to the line height? Can I use smaller line heights with smaller nozzle sizes or is there no relationship there? Is a 0.5 mm line height too much to shoot for? I wonder about the smaller nozzles plugging easier. Thanks Don
  21. Well that is amazing. Ok, understand now. My mental state is fixated on larger projects. Doing teeny tiny stuff would certainly require smaller nozzles.
  22. So what does decreasing the nozzle size do? If I change from .4mm to .25mm nozzle the print line width will be narrower but the line height will still be the same as that entered in Cura. I would need more passes to get the same wall thickness using the .25mm nozzle. This would make the print take longer. So what is the advantage of using a smaller nozzle? In what circumstances would you want to use a smaller nozzle?
  23. I may have answered my own question. The top part can stand on its own after I detached it from the main body. There is enough angel hair extruded below the top portion to support it. The first parts of the top piece are pretty rough but the top edge itself is fine. Interesting observation on support. It didn't take much to allow the printer to actually print the top piece. Maybe less support structure would work fine in some cases.
  24. Just looking at the photos now I am curious as to how the printer managed to print the top section of the enclosure at all. The whole thing is hanging out in space with no supports. But the top is mostly there. What would have held up the first layers that were printed out in the open air?
  25. I have printed an enclosure for an Arduino Uno successfully but had to make changes to the access holes for the USB and 12v connectors. The second print was coming along nicely but when I checked it this morning there was a surprise waiting for me. The top part of the enclosure was offset from the bottom. I cudgeled my brain for reasons. Did Cura reboot the printer for some reason? Did my cad file contain a fatal flaw? Did the printer head or the bed skip on the drive belt? As I mulled it all over my wife reminded me that the clocks were flashing this morning. We live in the country and small power outages are common. So the power went down, the laptop didn't care but when the power came on again the printer started but must have lost its reference to home. I'm impressed that the printer tried to keep going. I wonder if given our power situation a hefty computer UPS battery for the printer would work. Most power outages here are short.
