This (old) post also solved my very frustrating problem following a firmware update after replacing the hot end and having half the machine apart. I'd assumed I'd broken something, but after testing the switches was starting to fear I'd need a new mainboard. Factory reset did the trick. Breathing a huge sigh of relief now. Thanks to @tinkergnome and the OP!
