btw: if a program crashes silently it's always a good idea to start it in a terminal ...

Well, having registered this bug and gotten no response, it was time to go hunting. I finally tried putting this: "from OpenGL import GL" at the start of the cura_app.py so it looks like this:
#!/usr/bin/env python3# Copyright © 2015 Ultimaker B.V.# Cura is released under the terms of the AGPLv3 or higher.import sysfrom OpenGL import GL
and hey presto, it works!
