Heavy hack: bed autoleveling and tool height detection (ultimaker original -- full bed replacement)

Recommended Posts

Wow, my last post here probably dates back to years...!

Some of you may be interested in the last major modification I did to my quite old ultimaker: ditching the old wooden bed, using three Z screws so that the bed is held by three points (no more vibrations), and the benefit of having both automatic bed leveling and tool height detection. This way I can change my hot end and have the printer deal with it!

Looks like it is working well enough so far, even though I can probably get some more precision with slower home seeks. But it may give ideas to others :)

It solves a few of my two year old wishes  :)

    • "Back To The Future" using Generative Design & Investment Casting
Designing for light-weight parts is becoming more important, and I’m a firm believer in the need to produce lighter weight, less over-engineered parts for the future. This is for sustainability reasons because we need to be using less raw materials and, in things like transportation, it impacts the energy usage of the product during it’s service life.
