Fan is not running like it should.

Posted · Fan is not running like it should.

So, recently I acquired a new fan, as my old one was busted. This was same maker, same everything. When I plugged it in, however, my fan started to make this high pitched noise, and wouldn't start via the control board. However, when I spin it's blades on my own, it keeps on running. Thinking this was only the fan model, I plugged in another 24v fan. Excluding the high pitched hum, the exact same problem was there. What can I do to fix this?

If the new fan has the same specs as the original, maybe the board pwm fan was busted by that short circuit you got (old post I remember you wrote).

So. Easiest way to test if it's the board it's to connect the fan to the led pwm (both parts have the same circuit). Then you need to send the gcode M42 S128 to set the led pwm to 128 of 255. If the fan it's ok it should work. If the problem remains it's the fan.

So if you do that and it works on the led pwm then your pwm fan it's dead (probably a resistor or most probably the transistor since you got a short circuit before).

If so, I did a post long ago that explains (more or less) how to change it (but you need the propper tools and steady hand).

So try that first and if works on the led pwm you might need a firmware modded to change the pwm fan to pwm led, this way you would have a working by gcode fan.

Please triple check before pluging the fan to the led that the +/- it's perfectly in order, doing it wrong might break the led pwm also (if that's the problem).

Hmmm... the computer I'm working at doesn't recognize my printer as a device, and wont connect via USB Cable... Is there any way at all to send the gcode over via SD Card?

Yes. Make a txt file with the gcode commands. Remember to insert a return after each line or they won't work. Or get a gcode, edit, clean, and paste your gcode lines.

So fan works when using led pwm. Ok. Then you need to make your owm marlin.

I use @amedee branch

On pins.h under the ultimaker 2.1 board you need to swap the pins of fan pwm with led pwm
