Support in the X/Y Direction?

Hi there,

I'm trying to print something that's thin and tall. I use a brim but the problem is eventually it gets knocked down or shifted. I'm printing vertically to obtain a better resolution and was wondering if there's a way to generate supports not only for overhangs but for the side(s) of the print so that it's more stable while printing.

If the pieces that need support has an angle at all you could try playing around with the expert settings for the support and change the angle it activates at. Expert -> Open expert settings.

But it sounds like it would probably be better to design the extra support yourself. People are usually smarter when it comes to generating support like that.

If you download (free) Meshmixer that will let you add your own supports - I think it is part of the Autodesk stable now. If search the forum on meshmixer, @illuminarti wrote a great article on how to use supports in Meshmixer a couple of years ago

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses! I got around to trying both Meshmixer and Autodesk Print Studio. Meshmixer would crash anytime it would try to analyze/compute the supports so it was unusable on my system. Autodesk Print Studio has a wonderful UI and I've been able to add the supports I needed with no problem.

    Thanks again!

Where did you get PrintStudio from? I could not find it.

Interesting comment on Meshmixer. My version comes from before Autodesk go their hands on it and is perfectly stable!

Autodesk Fusion 360 (which is free for private use) will setup PrintStudio when you hit the "print" button. If you want it separately, these 2 links are given on the Dremel Homepage (my old printer is a Dremel):

Print Studio is part of the "Spark" framework. It is a standalone program, and are able to slice to g-code as well. You can read more about it here

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
