What stepper motor does Ultimaker 2 use?

Posted (edited) · What stepper motor does Ultimaker 2 use?

Hi,

My Ultimaker 2's stepper motor (Y Axis) doesn't work anymore and I urgently need to install a new one. Ordering one form ultimaker will take a long time. Anyone aware of the configuration of the kind of stepper motor they use in Ultimaker 2. Is it NEMA 16 0.9 or 1.8?

Thanks in advance.

Nema 17 1.8 check your dmg one, has a sticker with the full part number. Also try to make sure you get one with the same height so it fits.

Yes I checked, its the stepper motor. I peeled off the sticker from the motor, here are the numbers I foind on the sticker:

    SY42STH38-1684A

    060038101

The dimension on the Y axis is motor are: 39 X 40 mm.

    Thanks!

I found a local supplier with the following specifications:

    NEMA 17 stepper motor with a 1.8º step angle; Holding torque 0.44 Nm/4.4 Kg-cm. Current 1.7 A

Does anyone know if it should work?

    Thanks!

I think it should. Check the dimensions

Important stuff. 4 wire bipolar. The current of the motor seems ok. But I would need to check the pololu specifications sheet (google that part number you got and look for pololu info).

    3 seconds google :D

    Hello Neotko,

Please see attached image. Its the polou info for the company that makes steps motors locally: BH42 SH 47-1704 AF . The only major difference I see if I am not wrong is that the one Ultimaker 2 uses SY42STH38-1684A has Drive Set - Voltage 24 VAC Constant Current: 1.68 A Half Step and the one available to me Drive Set - Voltage 24 VAC Constant Current: 1.7 A Full Step. Does that make a difference?

    Thanks for all your help.

47mm length vs 38mm of the um2 motor, so you might need to remove the white enclosure of the motor to make it work. Try to measure the room to be sure it fits. The other specs seem fine. Also remember that you will need to solder the cables with the propper conector (or reuse the one you have from the dead motor).

I'm thinking would be easier/faster to ask your reseller/distributor one motor (they sell single spare parts). Just give them the prt number from the github link and they will give gou the price I think.

Anyhow, check the length of the motor & room available

Can I use the original stepper motor from the feeder, in the y-axis?

(It's slightly longer, but should not be a problem!)

    Wellcome in here Bpositivedotdk,

Sorry but you cannot use the old "original" feeder stepper motor (from an UM2) as a replacement for  x or y axis.

This is because x and y axis use a 200 step/rev stepper motor and your old feeder stepper motor has 400 step/rev.

    Thanks
