Bottom of print not as expected

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can explain what I am doing wrong here.

I uploaded some images in an Imgur album here:

As you can see, one of the flat sides is filled solid, without gaps. This is the top side of the print.

But the other one has a lot of space between the lines, and irregularities. This is the bottom side of the print.

The last picture is from the side.

I'm using a UM2 with the following settings:

I don't understand why the bottom side is so rough compared to the top side.

Can anyone shed some light on how/why this is happening?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi and welcome,

I think that you need to level the build plate a bit closer to the nozzle.

The first layer needs to be squished more. In your case it looks like the first layer is not squished but rather "layed".

The first layer in your case looks like the lines are piece of round filament, it needs to be flat.

If the first layer is almost transparent you are to close, if the lines are not closed you are to far.

More information can be found here

    Hi DidierKlein,

Thanks for your reply. This does make a lot of sense. I'll re-calibrate the build plate and give it another shot. I'll let you know the results.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
