Broken heatbed connector

Recommended Posts

Posted · Broken heatbed connector

Hi all,

My Ultimaker original + is 18 months old now, and has mostly unbeknownst to me been gradually failing over the past few months. It's been making an odd smell on heating up the bed, and I've finally diagnosed it as some kind of short on the heated bed power connector.

Unfortunately I only caught it because it was emitting a very small amount of smoke from the hot plastic insulation, and upon disassembling the heated bed and removing the connectors from the terminals, I've discovered what looks like verdigris traveling up the wires for about an inch. The strands are what could only be described as "slightly crunchy".

Additionally, one of the power terminals has I guess partially melted, as its screw does not activate the clamp which would hold new wiring in place. I contacted Ultimaker's Australian support branch a few months back when I noticed the odd smell, suspecting the heated bed as that's where the smell emitted from, and they advised that as it is out of warranty they will not replace either the cable or the bed.

It seems slightly unreasonable to have to replace the entire heated bed after 18 months, especially given what seems to amount to unlucky wiring and a soldered block terminal.

What I would like to know is does anyone have a part number for the surface mount terminal block that the heated bed uses? The bed was still heating up fine up until I turned it off, so it seems like a large waste to throw it out because the terminals are shot.

I believe I have the soldering skills to replace a 4 way connector, I just don't want to buy the wrong one. Worst comes to worst I guess I'll have to buy an entire new bed.
