I've read somewhere (correct me if I'm wrong) that an open PVA spool loses it's quality fast? So it's better not to leave an open PVA spool for months in your desk?
The moisture problem is kind of true for all filaments, some just absorb moisture faster. PVA and nylon are two filaments that absorb moisture like crazy.

Yes, it degrades quickly by absorbing water from the air. So if you're not planning on using your printer for a couple of days it's best to remove the spool and store it in an airtight container, preferably with a pack of silica gel.
How fast it degrades depends on how humid it is where it's stored of course.
It can be dried out if moisture starts affecting print performance.
