I think you are overly concerned about the couplers. Couplers are very common in CNC systems.

It depends on what you call concerned. I do not mind couplers in general, but in this case they add a lot of bulk to the whole set-up and put the motors in a vulnerable position when moving the printer around. I think they are not really needed anyway. That is why I would prefer to eliminate them, not because of some inherent dislike for couplers in general :) And if it does turn out to be the best solution to use them, I at least fiddled with it a bit and had some fun.

That is probably more of a discussion for the direct drive thread though.

Don't forget you will get rid of the variable 'short belts'...

Fair enough.

Edit: those cable tensioners work miracles. From sloppy prints with major issues to tight and smooth delight.

I have used helical couplings on several projects and never had any noticeable problem with them. You just don't want to put an axial load on them.

Getting rid of the short belts was about the best thing ever. Was such a pain to get the tension just right.

I converted a long time ago to direct drive. I just ordered the GT2 pulleys and belts.

I looked at the recommended Chopmeister twister blocks. The design looks good but I do not see any option for tension adjustment. How is that handled?

    Hi,

I face the same problem with not centered pulleys on my UM2 X-Y axises.

If I move the head by hand I can hear a noise something like 'vvvvvvVVVVVvvvvvvvVVVVVvvvvvVVVV' as 'snowygroach' posted.

I feel the main reason is that the inner diameter of these pulleys is a littlebig bigger than the axis shaft diameter and the second reason is that there is only one screw to fix the pulley at the axis. So I want to give it a try and replace them.

Can somone tell me what are the correct pulleys for my UM2 (No. of teeth, inner diameter, etc.) and where I can buy those in Germany or Europe?

    Thanks a lot!
