Critical aspects of UM2 that allow the Mark2 upgrade

Recommended Posts

Posted · Critical aspects of UM2 that allow the Mark2 upgrade

I am interested in either building a UM2+ to add the Mark2 upgrade to, or possibly borrowing the core mechanics from an UMO, adding 3rd party UM2+ compatible electronics and adapting the tool changer mechanics as required. Quite possibly I'll run some alternate extruder gear and hot ends.

What are the key aspects of an UM2 that allows the implementation of the Mark2 retrofit. I am particularly interested in what is required from an electronics/control stance. I understand that I need a PCB that supports 5 steppers. Is there a minimum hardware version? What is a reasonable expectation as far available heater wattage from factory control hardware?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

the Mark 2 mod has been developped and tested on UM2/2+ which are using the Ultimaker Board 2.1.1/2.1.4.

AFAIK these boards mostly merge the Arduino Mega 2560 and the stepper motors onto one PCB keeping it at least mostly identical, but I have never compared them side by side, what else was changed / added with the Ultimaker Board.

In the end it’s important that the Tinker firmware finds everything at expected ports.

Maybe @tinkergnome can tell if the UMO board would work?

Conny
