Hello, I have removed the file from your comment because first of all it seemed to be broken, and secondly; we rather not have these documents camping around here on the forums. They can become outdated and people could try to fix their firmware with old instructions, making their situation perhaps even worse. Updated instructions are never hard to come by if you ask the official source, and would eliminate the risk of outdated information quite significantly if not entirely.

Bricked my UM3 caused by an faulty patch by Bondtech for Bondtech QR feeder.

Um3 looped at startup and never finished booting.

File recovery-5.2.1120190503.img provided by CarloK brougt my UM3 back to life.

After Wifi-Setup another update was done by Air.

Everything fine now, also afterwards putty patch for Bondtech QR extruder Steps and speed.

Sometimes the unbricking procedure goes wrong - I've run into a few people who had some damage to the flash memory on their S5 (and this should work for S3/S5/UM3).  It was serious enough that they were told to buy a new processor board and for the S5 that's quite expensive.  So instead we were able to repair the flash memory (diagnose issue, repartition, reformat internal flash memory) such that then we could do the recovery image from Ultimaker.

The procedure is complicated and was a lot of work to write it up.  The first time it took me maybe 40 hours!  Now that I understand everything most people can do it in an hour or three.  Here is my lengthy writeup:

    Hi @gr5!

I have a bricked UM3 and I tried these steps with no luck.

I formatted the micro SD as FAT32 (probably unnecessary), plugged it into my laptop, and used ApplePiBaker to "Restore" the SD card with the recovery.img file. No response from the UM3. Any suggestions on next steps?

The red light on the Olimax and the green light on the white board are both on. Fan runs for about three seconds when you turn the printer on then stops.

Formatting to FAT32 does nothing as applePiBaker will remove all that and format it some linux format - I think maybe F2FS format (flash to file system).  Or maybe ext4.  I'm really not sure but that FAT32 gets erased right away.  The uSD gets partitioned into two partitions - a boot partition and then everything else on the second partition including a copy of debian jessie and all the files to copy onto the olimex internal drive.

What was the size of the uSD?  I believe it must be 4GB to 32GB.  < around 3GB and it might not store everything.  > 32GB and I think the olimex can't read it.

I have unbricked several especially troublesome S5 printers that had damage to the flash.  We were able to skip over the damaged area on the flash (the internal "hard drive" of the olimex).  I have tons of information on this web page and I keep adding to it.  By the way - where did you get the image for the UM3?

I strongly advise you get the olimex serial cable F.  You can get them on Amazon in USA (or digikey) and you can get them directly from olimex.com if you are in Europe.  More info on all this here:

I keep updating information on the above page as I learn more.

    Hi folks,

My UM3 Ex isn't booting up at all. When I turn it on, the fans power up for a second or two and  then nothing.  The PWR LED is still lit up on the PCB, but the front LCD never even lights up.   It's not the power supply, as I've used my working UM3's in another plug socket and that doens't make a difference.

I've tried to use the recovery image, explained so well above, but unfortunately, that hasn't done anything for me at all.

I wouldn't be electronically-minded and I was hoping that the image file would work.  I've attached photos of the boards, there doesn't seem to be any cables disconnected, but can any of you see any issues, like another LED needing to be lit with power going to both boards.

I got this machine through work and the service contract and warrenty have run out. Any help would be much appreciated.

      Kind regards,

     Shane

I've been tasked with trying to fix a dead UM3 Extended, when it came to me it booted, but stopped at the Ultimaker Logo. Not sure if the button litt up like it does now.
I did the standard recovery and it did make a difference...a small one...
    image.thumb.png.b82b68e756a5ef65c1558a9d21a6eb99.png
I now get this message, click the button and it continues and stops again at the Ultimaker logo.

I tried SSH, no go, it must not be in dev mode.
HDMI was tried, the PC screen shows the Ultimaker logo for 3-4 secs then goes black.
One thing that does work is WebUI, i get into it and can change the name of the printer and watch the camera, but that's it, it says it's unavailable for printing etc.

Is there any hope for fixing this with the USB serial cable or does it just need a new main board?

You should get the serial cable f - you can get at the logs and so much more.  And you can check if it thinks it's an extended or not.  And you can enable the sshd (ssh daemon) and much much more).

It's probably flash memory - it's crashing when it tries to read part of the "hard drive" (flash memory).

My instructions at the above link tell you how to reformat the partitions in new locations so you get fresh area of the flash memory as 90% of it isn't used anyway (the "user" area).

Thanks for the great guide gr5!
Sounds likely that it's the flash memory since the printer has been used a lot.
Will check with the owner what to do since i have not been allowed to buy anything or fix anything physically yet.

I updated my firmware to the latest version 2 days ago using the ethernet connection, and now the printer [UM3] won't boot. I tried the UM3_recovery-4.3.3.20180529.img recovery image on a microSD card, and it seems to have successfully  installed, based on the output to an hdmi monitor I had hooked up, which said "Installation complete Please power off now and remove the microSD card".
After pulling the card and turning the printer back on, the printer output over hdmi  said "File not found 236a-ffffffff", then after some other stuff, got stuck at "Starting kernel...". I tried this a couple of times with no love. Also tried it with another microSD card with still. no. love. Sounds a lot like what happened with The_Mixa, but in this case, all I did was the firmware update.

I took a photo of what was onscreen, if it would be of any help:

Thanks for all the advice in this thread!

@csarachene The 4.3.3 firmware version is almost 4 years old and you would have to do a few updates after this to get to the current version again.
Could you try with the most recent recovery version?

thanks for the suggestion, CarloK. That one wouldn't load at all. My HDMI monitor showed what looks to be a garbled Ultimaker logo, then nothing else happened after that. Do you know if there's another stable restore I could try?

@CarloK - you once told me that all the S5 printers have "nand" memory yet in the screen shot above this person seems to have "eMMC" memory.  I also have eMMC memory on my S5 although it is a pre-release beta S5 so not a great data point.

Could it be that all S5s actually have the eMMC and you were wrong or I somehow misunderstood?

One of the many reasons I ask this is that people who are very good at soldering have asked me which lime2 board to get and I repeated your advice but that's for a lime2 with nand.  These people said they would unsolder certain connectors and move the usb connector from the broken board to the new board in order to get their S5 running again with minimal expense.

@csarachene this is really valueable information.  If someone else has an S5 that won't boot should they try completely disconnecting the cable to the print head?  Will it then boot?  How did you end up diagnosing?  How would you recommend someone else diagnose this (without first ordering and replacing the print head PCB?

@gr5 This is not my specialism, I double checked with our Electronics department and I mixed up. During development both NAND and eMMC have been used. Production versions of the printers use the eMMC memory and not NAND as I've said before.

Mine's not an S5, but a UM3, if that makes any difference. I tried unplugging the cable at the print head prior to replacing the board, and it didn't help it to boot. I decided to replace the board because there had been a pretty gory head flood before that destroyed a print head on my first foray into ABS, and they're relatively cheap. Thing seems to be printing fine now, with PLA. I'm now trying to get ABS to stick to the build plate. I'm 0 for 4 now...

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
