Don't know what has been changed in the code but previous versions of Cura mostly started slow. But todays version 3.1 is the big winner in slow starting it takes more then 5 minutes before it runs if it even will start. Please Cura team fix this.

    Hi Folks,

Just checked my computer about yesterday (18 of January) and just found out that there was a silent upgrade running in background creating this influence on Cura.

So all of the below writing is not a correct observation.

    Apology everyone.

    Torgeir

    -------------------------------------

    Hi Folks,

Today I learned something new about Cura.

If you last had a "big" model sliced with Cura, do not quit Cura after such a model, just save your big model, the open a simple gcode model and now you can quit.

Re opening after opening a small model will open Cura kind of "fast".

There is something related to the size of the last model that is delaying the startup of Cura.

If you have several versions of Cura you're using, -say from 2.5 Beta and up, all of them is using same start "script" and is affected this way.

Actually, the older versions may hang all the time, but after this "treatment" with latest Cura version, they all come to live again..

Well, maybe not a big thing but help me some..

    Thanks

    Torgeir.

I'm pretty sure that won't have any effect on how fast cura starts.

Cura only starts slower the first time because it's creating some cache files. The size of the model when you close doesn't have an influence what so ever.

    Hi nallath,

    As always, you are right.

    Very sorry for this!

Startup time for Cura 3.1 is only 23 second.

    Torgeir.

IT starts really slow the first time after a computer reboot , takes  more than 6 mins. But thats everytime after a reboot. But this should also not be necessary in my honnest oppion.

It is possible to get Cura to load faster by stripping out the files in the Cura "resources" folder that are irrelevant to your printer or the materials you print.  There is a video on YouTube that explains what to do.  I found this substantially improved the loading speed on my computer.  Be aware that this is not likely supported by Ultimaker and when you update to the next version you may need to do this again.

If you're using a Windows computer, the "resources" folders is located in the "Ultimaker Cura" folder with the "Cura.exe" executable. See attached image.

    Well,

I tried Cura as well as IdeaMaker yet.

IdeaMaker takes ~3 seconds to be up and running.

    Cura 3.1 takes ~16 seconds to load - both on a Mac BookPro Retina Mid 2015 (2-5GHz i7 w. 16GB RAM).

EDIT: And I do not see a difference in load time whether I have sliced some big parts or not before quitting Cura the last time.

So I'd say yes, Cura is a slow loading application but one can live with it ;-)

EDIT: What I am more concerned about is the performance when previewing in layer view...

Quite unusable, especially when having bigger parts...

Curious how well the new version will behave.

Note that this will not be as effective in 3.2. We did a lot of magic to make the whole loading process way smarter. So this might make it a little bit faster, but not as much as it used to (3.2 should boot 2-3 times as fast compared to 3.1)

At least you get to see the 3.1 application... My 3.1 won't even start the splash screen... I hope that 3.2 works!
