Ultimaker 2+ .. adding time to prints and then fails

Posted · Ultimaker 2+ .. adding time to prints and then fails

I have an Ultimaker 2+ that is now failing prints and adding time to prints.

Current Setup

Ultimaker 2+  current firmware 5.2

Cura 4.0- fresh reinstall with no modification to settings

Material is Ultimaker PLA

Model is loaded into Cura and sliced showing 3.5 hour print time

Model is saved to SD card for printing

SD card inserted and print starts with progress time showing 3.5 hours to complete

Print starts off great.. then sometime about 1 hour mark it starts to add time for completion...  currently now at 36 hours?????  Print will eventually fail as if its skipping layers

Anyone else had this happen????  Printer is a few years old with low use on it..  I have changed out the nozzle , updated the firmware, reinstalled cura ... still same problem... what should I do next

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Sounds like 2 different issues.

    1) The "time left" is wrong.  This is common - usually it takes almost exactly the time that cura says it will take.  But part way through the print it may think it will take much longer if the initial layers were more filament and the future layers are less.  Even 10X as the upper layers may need 1/10th as much plastic.  This issue is not normally a serious problem.

    2) Air printing.  What you describe sounds like underextrusion (or not extruding at all) but a photo would help.  Anyway the UM2+ is notorious for underextruding due to the teflon part getting old.  They are cheap and need replacing every few hundred hours of printing.  Some will last only 200 hours, some will last 500 hours.  They are cheaper than filament and are set to be at a good price because UM is nice and they know you will have to change that part often.

There are other possibilites but this is the most likely.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
