Ultimaker S5 having trouble printing large footprint object

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited) · Ultimaker S5 having trouble printing large footprint object

We have been trying to print a large object for a project and every time we try printing the object it fails an hour or so in. It will start grinding the filament and cause it to pause the print because it doesn't detect the movement. We have tried adjusting the tension in the extruder and different filaments and it still fails. I have included the STL file of the print and pictures of the failed prints. We are lost at what to do now.(Printing at the largest recommended layer height with recommended settings) (We are using 3D party filaments for this project currently and specifically now the MatterHackers Build Series PLA)

You are probably printing too fast (too much volume) for the temperature.  Try cutting the infill speed in half in cura or (only if PLA) try raising the temperature by 20C (but don't go over 240C).  Or make the layer height smaller.

Here are top recommended speeds for .2mm layers (twice as fast for .1mm layers) and .4mm nozzle:
20mm/sec at 200C
30mm/sec at 210C
40mm/sec at 225C
50mm/sec at 240C
The S5 can do double these speeds but with some difficulty.

If the above speeds (DANGER - cura has many speeds - check them all) are exceeded for your printing temp and layer height then that's the problem.  If they are not exceeded then you have a hardware problem.  I can help you diagnose if it's the core or the feeder.
