Ultimaker S5 Open Source files?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Ultimaker S5 Open Source files?

Hello,

We purchased an Ultimaker S5 for some experimental developments. Our reseller told us the printer was open source so you could do anything to it, which was what we required.

At the moment howeer we are having trouble doing hardware modifications since the 3D models are still not available-

Why not?

Was this not supposed to be Open Source files?

We really need to make these modifications and having to manually re-model the parts is very time consuming. I saw that with UM3, the files were shared 12 months later. Why not with S5?

Is there any official news?

Thanks

TEO

Yea your reseller did lie. They are ‘open’ up to a point but they don’t share, for example, the firmware build or how disable the firmware key (to easily build your own firmware) ofc they do share info about how to do it. For um3 firmware key disable (no idea if works same on S3) check (can’t find the url with the post..)

Without access to the firmware any hardware mod will be pita since um3/s3 doesn’t allow to easily force other gcode and that means that even the heating sequence (bed, core cartridges) can’t be changed.

    Good luck with the modding!

But one important factor is that you can ask directly to um employees through the forum, so maybe they can help you reach your goal

Just as a reference point, I think it was over a year after the official release of the previous model (UM3 / UM3E) before Ultimaker released the CAD files for (most of) the mechanical parts.  Many of the parts used on the S5 are the same as the ones used on the UM3 / UM3E, so if there are specific parts you want, you can likely use those.  For example, the spool holder is identical between the older UM3 and the newer S5.  I have a modification to that part that works on both, and the 3D files for the UM3 spool holder is available.
