Basically the prime tower helps to reduce oozing and to prime the nozzle before printing the next layer. When printing dual colors it can help to get a sharper and cleaner separation between the two colors. In most cases it is not needed, but if you need a perfect surface in dual color mode, then give it a try.
When printing with support materials, it is not needed in my opinion.

It useful when you have material that is drooling when the second nozzle starts to heat but if not, you don't need it.
