Will Cura ever come to IOS?

Posted · Will Cura ever come to IOS?

Hi, I’m just wondering if Cura will ever come to IOS. I recently switched to an iPad to do my daily stuff, and I can even 3D model on it, but I’ve never been able to find a replacement for Cura, or in fact any IOS or online based slicer. It’s a petty problem, but I find it annoying to do all my work on my iPad, only to have to lug out the laptop, see if it’s charged, wait for Cura to start, then use it for 2 minutes and put it away. I know it would require extensive rewriting, but what if you just did an online version on servers you may already have? Heck, I would even pay for that. I just really want something equivalent to Cura (preferably actual Cura) to be available on an IOS device. Do you have any plans to do this ever, or is it just a lost cause?

It's not very likely. A fair amount of technologies that we use to make Cura are either partially or fully incompatible with IOS. As such, it would require a vast amount of re-work (and subsequently; maintenance) to create an IOS version.

Slicing online might be something we will some day look in to, but it shares a number of the problems associated with IOS.

Someone has actually started that process:

It's buggy and incomplete right now, but a really interesting start.  And as someone who likes Shapr3D and Octoprint.. I would love this...

Wow, thanks for sharing that. I’ve installed the beta and looked at the code a bit. It looked really cool so far, maybe the Ultimaker team could look at it at help since they don’t have to do it all themselves.

It's not a full implementation of Cura, it's porting the engine so that it can be used on IOS.

Anyhow, we have our hands full as it is, so we won't be helping out on porting Cura to IOS.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
