Hi,

What is required (in terms of substitutions and/or modifications) in order to upgrade an UMO to an UMO+ (or even a UM2).

Thanks in advance.

The most important upgrade is the heated bed.  Not just because it is heated but because the whole mechanical design is much better.

There is a kit to upgrade the heated bed.  Look around - someone might still be selling it somewhere.

    Thanks! I will.

And what about the main controller (board)? Isn't it different and uses different voltage and temperature sensors also?

    Cheers,

The Ultimaker2 uses PT100 sensors for the bed and head, I'm pretty sure there are guides in this forum to help you convert the machine to an UM2, you need a small convertor board for the pt100.  You may be able to find a UM2 head from people who have upgraded their  UM2 to UM2+ ...

    here's some inspiration 🙂

The UMO upgrade kit includes a 24V power supply (UMO uses 19V) and it includes a circuit that converts 24V to 19V for the "old" UMO board so the UMO board still runs on 19V but the small circuit that comes with the kit provides power for the new heated bed and also converts the pt100 sensor (part of the heated bed) signal to a voltage that the "old" UMO board can read.  Basically the upgrade kit has everything you need.  It does not modify the print head itself at all.

As arjan says, you can also shove UM2 parts onto a UMO.  The "UM2+" upgrade above is a different kit meant for upgrading UM2 to UM2+ but you could use it and a few hacks (and you'd have to buy the white UM2 PCB).  You'd also have to buy a 24V power supply.  Converting a UMO to a UM2 is an engineering challenge but certainly can be done.

    Meanwell PSU 24V

a UltimakerBoard (AliExpress has cheap options (I did use 2 long ago and they work)

Pt100 and 24v heater and hotend with a proper olsson

You will need to (for quality) change the belts from MXL to GT2 (google many post about that on this forum)
Central shafts of umo and um2 have different size, check my thingiverse neotko account for a sliderblock that allows to use them with mxl or gt2 belts (saves money on shafts)

Ofc a new bed, new square flanged bearings for the um2 bed, it can buy bought at any um reseller as um2 bed kit afaik or in parts on aliexpress (um2 bed kit comes with everything even the bearings but at a cost). For the parts check the um2 assembly manual on github to see it. Or even better check the umo+ upgrade kit assembly to see how to assemble the bed and all the parts it uses.

Overall is a lot of stuff, specially umo to um2, but like everything with time and money is doable 😄

    Thank you guys!

This is most helpful. I'll check the requirements and their prices online.

    Cheers and stay safe.
