Posted · Broken Ultimaker 3/S5 print core top latch

I don't know what to call it, but the top translucent plastic part of an AA core has broken off! Anyone tried printing a replacement, or does Ultimaker provide these? This nozzle has plenty of life left so would be a shame to throw it away just from a broken piece of plastic.

Anyone tried replacing this part of a print core before?

Lever was the word I was missing - thanks for the help! I'll try printing the first one soon and see if the core can be brought back to life. I just have to find the spring that I misplaced when taking that picture... 🤔

Officially this part is called Top bracket (Source: https://support.ultimaker.com/s/article/000002903).

Unfortunately, the 3D-printed spare doesn't last long and when it breaks and jams the print core in the print head it gets tricky to resolve the situation.

Really wish UltiMaker would reconsider providing it as a service part.

If you're going to print a replacement for this part, I recommend printing in PC; they should hold up for quite a while. It's also worth noting that making sure you grip the Print Core during insertion and removal as closed on the clip part toward the middle of the core as possible (rather than the outer edge) puts less strain on the plastic parts.

Thanks, Erin! But I am printing them using UltiMaker PC Transparent™. Using AA 0.25 and print speed reduced to 10 mm/s (as per UltiMaker recommendation the 10 mm/s snail speed should provide PC a better interlayer bonding).

I guess, I am handling the print cores wrong when changing them. And I do change them quite frequently, as I am using separate core for hot, hotter and hottest printing temps. It's faster to change than clean when switching filaments.

And, when I do change the core, I guess I shouldn't squeeze the top bracket against the lever, but rather try to lift the lever up to the top bracket instead?

When I squeeze, the top bracket tends to break at its thinnest section. Requiring print head removal, disassembly, removing broken print core and reassembly by your excellent YouTube instructions (much appreciated BTW!).

yea..... you should NEVER try to bend it down.. your supposed to lift up.

Open the front fan bracket of the print head. Squeeze the black lever of the print core upward and slide the print core into slot 2. Ensure it securely clicks into place and close the front fan bracket again. For more detailed information, visit the installation instructions:
