Posted (edited) · Why is Cura Jerky/Laggy positioning models???

This has been a constant issue for me since I think around 4.2 But I thought I'd got around it by disabling network printers via the Market Place but this no longer seems to works with 4.8 (I also disabled update checker just in case).

Basically I'm trying to position multiple small models on a plate and the drag function is virtually unusable. Sometimes it takes upto 10 seconds for the model to even start moving then it's jerky as hell. All in all work that should take a few seconds or a minute or two is taking many times longer.

It's got to a point where I'm looking for new slicing software - which after spending 5 years or so learning Cura is going to be a nightmare in itself.

Not Happy.

There are too many things that could cause this. Some machines have a lot of issues with the network/octoprint plugin, but we still haven't been able to find out why. We've also gotten reports of slowdowns for other people, but without more information, there is little we can do.

Sorry, the forums are really bad for keeping track of issues. This is why we prefer it if people post them on github.

Have you tried disabling the network plugin and did you check if you have a network drive enabled?

I'm having issues too, my PC is nothing to boast about, but it defintely has enough power to run Cura in theory, and clearly  exceeds the recommended requirements, yet moving parts about on the build plate or trying to maniplulate the 3d image on the preview so that you can drop down through the slices to check its all ok before you hit the print button, results in lagging and stuttering and enfuriatingly slow performance.

2x 1080p 60Hz monitors, nothing fancy. Windows 11 Pro regularly updated, graphics drivers regularly updated, the only thing I haven't done for a few years is update BIOS.

I have restarted the PC, I have Changed setting, I have run it while graphing performance and it is not causing significant stess in any of the main performance criteria.  I have diasbled or removed the suggested plugins from Cura, removed and reinstalled Cura, I just don't understand why its behaving this way.  Very frustrating.

    Anyone found a solution yet?

    @Neil_MacC

Hiya! Just a quick heads up: it's better to create a new thread than to revive one which is nearly 4 years old 🧓

Anyway, about your problem: I can see that either your main GPU isn't running or that other applications aren't allowed to poll its clock speed (long story; short version is it's a security thing).

If Cura isn't using the main GPU that could explain poor performance. Here's how to make sure it does:

    1. Open the Windows Settings app.
    2. Go into System > Display > Graphics (it'll be down the bottom of that list).
    3. Under Custom options for apps make sure "Desktop app" is selected in the dropdown in click Browse
    4. Navigate to the Cura executable. By default it installs to C:\Program Files\UltiMaker Cura <version number>\UltiMaker-Cura.exe - either double click it or select it and click Add in the bottom right of the file browser.
    5. By default Windows should automatically select the entry for UltiMaker-Cura.exe but if it doesn't scroll down and click on it.
    6. Click Options
    7. Select High performance and click Save
    8. If you have Cura running, you'll need to restart it for the change to take effect.

(For new versions of Cura you may have to repeat the process since they don't overwrite previous versions so it'll be a new exe)

That might not be it (HWinfo sometimes only wakes a GPU for long enough to get its info) but it's good place to start.
