Can you 'unlock' the support extruder in support settings?

Posted · Can you 'unlock' the support extruder in support settings?

I'm trying to get a printer with two extruders to print separate objects but cura always wants to assign one of the heads to do all the supports.

Print settings - Support - Generate support (ticked) - Support extruder etc is then locked to one nominated extruder

Is there any way to unlock it?

Thanks🙏

You can assign extruder per model. That would be how you would print multicolour designs. On the bottom left hand side of the tool bar, select the model and then click on the number of the extruder. But when it comes to supports, you have to pick an extruder. There are certain parts of the extrusion that you can choose the parts of the support to be which extruder. But for simplicity, you can assign models to either extruder and choose extruder(s) for parts of the support.

Thanks so much for the reply, really appreciate it!

Out of curiosity whats the logic in locking the extruder/support up? Surely you could print multiple objects faster if it was unlocked.

    Thanks again!

All support in the scene is seen as a single object (even if parts of that object do not connect to make it a single cohesive volume). A single object can logically only have a single extruder assigned to it.

    Ah, ok.

Have previously been using craftware for an idex machine and when you are printing in parallel or mirror mode it effectively splits the bed in half and uses one extruder per side, so was hoping to achieve the same in cura🙂

    Thanks again🙏
