Missing Layers - What do I do?

Posted · Missing Layers - What do I do?

Hi There, I'm absolutely new and am starting to learn.  I've used cura a little and have printed basic parts.  But now I'm trying to design my own RC Plane, and am having problems.  I need help solving why I have missing layers.  I've tried increasing the size of my object but I keep having the same missing walls.  Can someone help me or direct me to what I need to do next to problem solve this.  I've looked at various forum topics on missing layers but none seem to help me.

I've attached the .stl file and pictures from Cura.

I really appreciate any help or direction on this.

The model is "broken". It contains missing or extraneous faces, which confuse Cura. The polkadot pattern shows where the model has issues (ie: a lot of issues!). In addition to the missing or extraneous faces, the models are broken (but those should not affect the slicing much). Some of the normals are inverted (causing the red faces on top).

If you used sketchup then here's a tutorial to fix your model:

    https://i.materialise.com/blog/3d-printing-with-sketchup/

You can try one of these 3 repair services if this isn't your model.

Cura has an amazing plugin to test your model to see if something is wrong with it and can repair a very few of the many potential problems:
In the upper right corner of Cura click "marketplace" and make sure you are on the "plugins" tab and install "Mesh Tools".  Then restart Cura.  Now right click on your model, choose "mesh tools" and first choose
"check mesh", then "fix model normals" and "fix simple holes" to see if that helps.  Cura doesn't fix most issues so...

netfabb free repair service is here (you have to create a free account first):
    https://service.netfabb.com/login.php

Here's another service - drag and drop mesh repair service:

Thank you for your help.  You mentioned some terminology that is new to me, but I googled them which led me to  the "Remesh" modifier in blender.  After fooling around with it  I got it to work.  It fixed everything that was broken with my design.  I'll keep looking around this forum and pick up some more new terminology.

    I'll install the mesh tools.

Thanks for helping the noob.  I'll certainly be back for help.

I have sad news to report.  Service.netfabb.com is gone.  AutoDesk rolled it into Fusion 360 and now you have to pay for it.

On the upside, I did find https://www.formware.co/onlinestlrepair and it's a tad slower but gives a report on what it found wrong with your model.  They do impose on time limit on their service and if a model takes too long during processing it gets kicked out.

For hobbyists and non commercials it is still free. But a way oversized when someone just needs to check or repair a mesh.

Sad that the netfabb tool is not available anymore, it was a quick win to repair bad STLs.
