Posted · Print head too low after changing filament mid-print on S5

Hi,

I've been having trouble with changing filament mid print on the S5, if the filament is changed mid print then when printing resumes the head will bury itself approximately 1 mm too low in the print destroying the part. Do you know if there is a setting I'm missing whcih is causing this, or whether it is just an error? For my most print this occured while using the 0.8 mm nozzle.

(Cura 4.10.0, Ultimaker S5, 1x 0.4 mm printcore, 1x 0.8 mm printcore)

Is it possible that the head is getting bumped during the filament change? If it did it would lose the steps and then the lifting switch would miss the bay when it goes back over and your second nozzle could drag through.

I don't believe so, I leave the doors and air handler shut during the change, so I'm not sure what I would be bumping it with. I will try to do a test on a small print to see though.

@rydm I will check that on my printer as well.
Can you tell me which firmware version you have installed on your machine?
Do you have a Material Station connected to your printer?

@rdym Are you using the 'pause at height" feature in Cura to initiate your material change?
If yes, then Cura 4.11 (now in beta) contains a fix for that plugin. Initiating a pause in the first 15mm of a print would push the printhead 1 mm in the object on resume. This bug was already fixed when using the layer count as a trigger, but was overlooked for triggering on print height.

@CarloK, no I haven't been using pause at height. Would using this help my situation?
