I tried the WhamBam smooth plate and even with PLA, the hot nozzle damaged the PEI on bed level probing. I tried their textured plate next and that one works a treat. It makes a nice texture on the bottom of the part and doesn't seem to be suffering any damage from the bed leveling. I do tend to use a bit of Z offset (with the Cura plugin) to increase the squish a bit, typically about 1/2 the thickness of the initial layer, and I run the bed around 80-85C; but otherwise, it's plug and play, and very useful for PLA and maybe ABS. I don't use it on anything hotter than that though.

Working great with PEI but with the standard Build-Tak surface the hot nozzle digs in during levelling on an Ultimaker.
