There's no exact cutoff of what an overhang can get to. It just gets worse and worse as you get closer to horizontal. I guess horizontal is the cutoff. Even 10 degrees from horizontal is printable and I've printed round arches without any support - it's not pretty but it works.

In general - for nice looking surfaces, a 45 degree angle is a good limiting goal. Make sure the fan is at 100% before it gets to these overhangs - but don't switch the fan from 0% to 100% on a single layer or you will cool the nozzle too fast and get underextrusion for a minute until the controller compensates for cooler breeze.

When the head is within 10mm of the buildplate, the fan air bounces off and cools the nozzle quite a bit. When you are printing "up high" it's not so much.

But when printing overhangs and bridges (think the top of an open doorway) you want max possible fan.

    Thanks for all this expert feeback Gents. It has given me a great start.

    It's amazing how fast the brain can go from, "Wow this is great, what the hell do I do with it"......to....."Wow this is great, now I can fix the XXXXX around the house".......really amazing tool.

    I'm still playing with my test obect too. The largest one (10cm) being the most recent.........printing wise, does it look about right to you? There are some model edits I can do to certain areas to improve accuracy like under the number key pad near its "eye"........add some thickness to that bottom ledge...........

    How about the upper arm. On the left of the upper arm, is a tube structure that is very nice and smooth, and next to it on other side of arm is a flat/square surface that looks quite rough........any tips for this sort of thing?

    The above image is from your video near the end. The red arrow points to the gap between the pulley and the motor. That is huge on your machine compared to mine. That gap should be as small as possible without touching the motor. It's about 1/2 mm on mine. I suggest you remove the left back metal cover (just one screw to remove that screws directly into a threaded nut like piece welded to the cover), remove the motor, loosen the pulley on the motor and slide it closer to the motor without touching it, tighten it back up (very very tight) and then put it all back together.

     

    I had the same issue today. During the last few days I recognized a noise in the left back of the UM2. The information of gr5 helped a lot.

    I just followed the instruction above and am now back printing very silent again.

    I have an horrible squeaking noise in my UM2 since my last print, I remembered there was a topic about it on the forum but unfortunately my noise hasn't the same origin, it's the filament feeder that is horribly crying when retracting the filament.

    A print is in progress now, will dig in to it when it'll be finished.

    I had that noise briefly in the early days of owning the UM2. It only lasted 2-3 prints and then suddenly went away. I think it might've been the filament rubbing against the internals of the extruder but I'm not sure (hard to diagnose since it went away relatively quickly).

    Your extruder is haunted! :O

    Make the PLA go into the extruder more vertically and see if that helps:

    I mean - don't build this thing necessarily, just unwind the filament a bit.

    Yup, that sounds hauntingly familiar. Luckily for me it went away fairly quickly. It's already known that there's some serious rubbing on in there and I'm sure that's what's making the noise until the point it has rubbed down far enough.

    Nop, doesn't help...

    Strangely enough it doesn't do it all the time, only at certain moments... maybe related to the angle of the motor shaft itself ?

    I removed the 4 bolts from the exturder and rescrewed with slightly more torque, then removed the filament and refitted it... looks gone for now :shock:

    Ok so not solved... It always comes back soon or later. During a print I can slighlty unbolt the bolts and it will go away for something like an hour, then it comes back, if I rebolt those slightly more... then again it goes away for some time and comes back. I guess it somewhat proves there's some inadequate friction in the extruder...

    Well the OP, F1Carl solved his problem. You kind of hijacked his thread. But at least the problem has been diagnosed somewhat. Just no obvious fix.

    Have you considered a little light oil? It's okay for oil to get into the print head - it just goes right on through to the part and doesn't cause problems.

    However oil on the hobbed sleeve might be bad as then filament might slip. I dont' know.

    Thanks guys. Had the same squeeking noise from exactly the same source: left back short belt on the motor side. Disassembled the motor, moved the pully and BAM! FIXED. Happy :)
