Ultimaker 2 'Local Pick-up' at night.

I already have a few ideas:

First Ultimaker must of course protect the storehouse better, so it will not get worse and more units are stolen.

1.) The machine defined in terms of the overall concept. And only in selling the whole machine the thieves get the maximum yield. Clever thieves will not believe the whole machine to offer, as the Ultimaker2 is currently still too specific. Public paths use to bring stolen goods to the man, not a good solution are determined in this case.

Please do not misunderstand the following Ultimaker, finally, I've also bought a UM2 and am satisfied so far. But:

1a.) I could easily replicate at home the machine for just under 600 euros total material costs. Then I would have a working machine, with almost identical features. An elegant dice in a glamorous housing, with a few little extras and optimizations perhaps. First, i have put together just a small team. Well anyway, I have some crazy ideas on the schedule ...

2.) But now seriously, what is so very special to Ultimaker2 ...?

The entire case, or parts from the body (hard to sell, since presumably rare defect). But sure these parts are available somewhere soon. A watchful eye in this direction seems to be promising success, take the correct lane.

3.) The complete print head is probably the most promising part of the UM2, since parts of it can be used for upgrading an existing machine and a second print head is not yet officially available from Ultimaker. Well that only Ultimaker offers special machine parts, as far as I know.

4.) Forget the sticker with the machine serial number. There is still the complete Arduino Main Board with all connectors (very special) and the Ultimaker label. Possibly every board has a printed serial number, and a readable via software serial number of Arduino for example. This could be taken into account in the future, even if it is already too late for the stolen machines. Also the board I count among the most desirable components.

5) The hot plate has a Ultimaker label, you can recognize it when the platform is very high up in the front right corner.

6) And a few other components such as the case for the X / Y-carriage with the sliding bearings are something special, and could appear separately.

7) All other components are not very special, but this promise no lucrative revenue as opposed to the sale of the aforementioned much more specific components and the quality overall product. eBay will soon have many matching small parts (not typical) for the Ultimaker2.

Nice to know that the waiting honest customers do not seem to suffer from this fact, so no huge delays also occur.

Good luck

Markus

I can guarantee that it's the first thing we did. We also got way more watchful for strangers.

The police also told us the next door neighbours have had some regular break-ins. And we have seen some odd people in a white van driving up our one-way street at night. So those might be linked. (We usually spend the Tuesdays evenings working on hobby projects at the office)

I hope you snapped the bad guys soon and let them build under control UM2s in jail.

The thought is not completely off. It's remarkable what kind of workshops in prisons exist. I remember a story from my childhood. I had a RC car which was broken one day. After a phone call on the service hotline we were told to bring it to a prison near the place I lived then. About two hours later we got a call that the RC car is ready for pick-up. I was so happy about that prison that day... :)

Of course you could "profit" (just so I don't have to use the word "steal") from others doing all the research and engineering to create a machine and just replicate it (aka fake it) at much lower costs, while the original designers still have to get back all the money they spent on their research & development.

    ...

That's the beauty of the machine. There are no uber-specialized parts, it's all pretty simple in the end. But that just means there was very good engineering involved because they could also have done that in a much more complicated way.

You have to decide yourself if you want to honor that work by buying an Ultimaker or just replicate it yourself.

Actually. That's bad. The prisoners are used a very low payed labor. Nearing slavery. Which gives people who run the prison no incentive to prevent people from landing in prison again. It actually is profitable for them to keep as much people in prison for as long as possible, as they are making a profit from the prisoners labor.

I don't know about the prisons in the Netherlands but in Switzerland prisons are more than full and nobody wants to keep prisoners longer than necessary.

This system in Switzerland has actually nothing to do with profit. The work these people do part of a program to keep these people mentally as healthy as possible by giving them some adequate work to do. It's true, they do not make a lot of money but it's enough that when they receive it after maybe 20 years it is a good starting capital back in the outside life.

    Dear Friends of Ultimaker,

Since we first started with the Ultimaker Protobox things have been looking good.

The future looks bright and through hard work we watched Ultimaker grow into a wonderful company with many happy and active users.

It is amazing to see how the Ultimaker 2 was received by the world and we know that we are still on the right track.

It turns out the Ultimaker 2 is so popular it makes people break the law, because last Sunday some burglars forced their way in our warehouse and stole approx 30 units.

Luckily we have the serial numbers, so we can identify the stolen units.

We would appreciate it very much if you could help us locate these units. By keeping your eyes open for any suspicious sales of Ultimaker 2's

and notify us about it. Perhaps we can prevent these units from being sold and people paying the full price without any of the guarantees or warranties.

Edit: This is what a stolen serial numbers looks like: UM2A07 - MES133755

With combined effort we have been able to prevent any delay in further deliveries.

Any information will be forwarded to the local police.

    Thank you for your time.

    Hello from Canada,

Wow that's really bad. Do you think these units may be landing here in Canada? We coukld help by keeping an eye at a popular site called KIJIJI (Market place for use goods).

    Cynosure

Probably a bit late to be related, but this eBay listing seems kind of sketchy:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ULTIMAKER-2-3D-PRINTER-/131267544424

They've got a 'brand new' UM2 up on a 2-day auction (listing says 1 day, but appears to be incorrect) with no reserve price. No pictures of the actual printer (they just have a couple of stock photos up), and the listing text is just a copy/paste of the https://www.ultimaker.com/products/ultimaker-2.

I can't imagine that people are buying UM2's at retail for the sake of reselling them on eBay (especially without setting a reserve price), and it seems odd that someone would otherwise turn around and sell their personal UM2 without unboxing it and using it at least once (and without including a story about why they're parting with it in the eBay listing).

Perhaps that person received (knowingly or not) one of the stolen printers, and now is trying to unload it?

It is strange, but sometimes strange things happen.

Hard to tell at this point what this is about.

Anyway, I will forward the link to our point of contact with the authorities.

Perhaps it is still of value to them.

Thanks for notifying us anyway! :)

Look at the Business seller information and note the address.

    Then read the returns policy!

    Hi everyone

I work with cubeX Printers at work but would love an ultimaker for home use so I am always on the lookout for a bargain. I have seen so many 'Brand New Sealed in Box' Ultimakers on ebay here recently so I googled 'stolen ultimaker 2' and found this thread.

Not wanting to stir or cause trouble if these are legitimate sales but it seems fishy to me, some were up for 1 day auction..

I found this Ultimaker 2 fully assembled WITH the olsson block. it seemed suspicious because of the incredibly low price and the fact that the olsson block was misspelled.

    Heres The link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultimaker-2-3D-Printer-with-Olson-Block-/291704636892?hash=item43eaf385dc:g:t08AAOSwa-dWnZBP

@Kodi it seems good at first sight. Probably someone want to sell the stock and get a um2+

Also they offer 2 year warranty for some cash. It doesn't look like a clone at all.

This is why I say everything needs a remote controlled C4 security system.

Just hit the trigger to locate anything stolen via explosion. Would work great on

    Motorcycles, Cars and Ultimakers.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
