understanding Quality Settings

Hi all

Hoping someone here has played with this before and can tell me what i am missing.

My printer (Creality Ender 5 S1) was not supported in Cura 4.12.1 but I wish to use this version for printing planeprint models. Using a custom FFF printer i get horrible underextrusion, I believe it's because the e-steps on this printer are gear multiplied. But that's just a guess.

I was able to locate the printer definition in Cura 5.5.0 - creality_ender5s1.def.json

I can therefore add this printer to Cura 4.12.1 using this definition and achieve a reasonable print. however, i am unable to use profiles with this print, it tells me that none of the quality settings for my profiles are compatible with the printer.

from what i have found, it is actually in the materials that quality is defined. I am using PLA+ and generic PLA.

1. do i need to import an extruder definition for this printer? if so, how? as in, where in the cura printer definition does it point to an extruder definition?

2. how can i determine why Cura thinks that this printer does not support any of the typical quality types such as standard, fine, coarse, draft, dynamic, low etc. I am looking high and low in quality, definitions, extruders but i cannot find the link which determines the supported quality type for the printer.

Am i barking up the wrong tree completely?

(and if you are wondering why i cannot use 5.5.0, it does some wierd things with certain parts of surface models. I can get close by enabling 'keep disconnected faces' in 5.5. but still not close enough to make a usable print.)

AFAIK all the Creality profiles use the same generic Creality extruder profile, though it might have changed since a version that old.

You're probably just missing the nozzle definitions - in Windows go to C:\Program Files\UltiMaker Cura 5.5.0\share\cura\resources\variants\creality and copy the ones for your printer into the older version of Cura.
