Posted · 5-Year-Old Ultimaker 2+ Shutting Off Mid-Print

Hi,

I have an Ultimaker 2+ that I bought back in 2018, and I've used the heck out of it since then without any real problems. About 2 days ago, however, it shut off mid-print and didn't reboot. Moreover, when I tried cycling the power, it wouldn't turn back on. I only managed to get it to turn back on after leaving it unplugged for a few minutes. Leading up to this, I have been periodically getting some errors while printing, but nothing that caused the printer to reboot or turn off, (unfortunately, I didn't write down the error codes). I tried reseating the temp sensor and heater cartridge, and that seemed to eliminate the errors until my present situation.

To that end, I was wondering: what could cause this sort of behavior in an Ultimaker 2+? Is it something that I could easily fix myself, or is the printer starting to go? I've read that other users have had similar problems owing to faulty PSUs, buildup of dust from the belts on the motors or control board, or overheating of some other kind, but I'm not sure how applicable these are to my case. What troubleshooting steps might I follow to diagnose this further?

Some additional info about my printer:

I'm currently using Tinkergnome firmware (since 2020), a Bondtech DDG feeder (since 2019), as well as a 3DSolex I2K teflon insulator between the TFM coupler and Olsson block (since early last year, for printing CPE and PCTG at higher temperatures). It's also worth noting that I've printed with this particular GCode file several times before with no issues, (using a hardened steel nozzle each time, including with the print that failed). The temperatures were well within what a vanilla 2+ can handle.

I'm not currently at home, so I don't have the Tinkergnome version number on hand, but I can provide it if needed when I get back. If any other files or pieces of information would be useful, please let me know and I'd be happy to provide them.

Many thanks!
