Trying to figure out why an Ultimaker S7 can't level the print bed to start a job or raise the print bed from the maintenance menu.

Bed will move to bottom position, start rising, then make some horrible noises while reversing direction.

I've tried cleaning the lead screw (nothing there) and tightening the screws on the base and the platform around the lead screw (all were already tight).  I also checked the clearances between the print bed and the side motor covers.  All good.

Here's a video showing the printer in action.

Any suggestion?

Have you lubricated the Z-shafts as well as the Z-screw? They'll need sewing machine oil.

Also, if you remove the reel holder, does it make a difference? Could the bed be catching on it? It looks like it's failing right at the point where it reaches it.

I'm having a very similar issue with my S7 ... it happens above the reel holder so I don't think that's it.

During the bed leveling procedure, after the print head goes to the front of the plate in the middle (left-right), it goes to the back right corner. As the plate rises vertically, about midway through, there's a grinding sound  and the plate stops rising and drops a tiny bit, then it goes up a tiny bit, and then the bed leveling error comes up.

Sometimes trying the print again immediately fixes it, sometimes not. I have lubricated both the Z-shafts and the Z-screw, which seems to help a bit but not 100%. And when I raise and lower the plate repeatedly it never makes that grinding sound.

The noise level of the active leveling sensor is 4.82 which I believe is within the limits. I'm not sure what else to try. The nozzles look good. I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Midway trough does sounds like it might still be catching on the spool holder, have you tried removing it?
If the error happens before the buildplate gets to within 10 mm of the printhead or so it has nothing to do with active leveling/sensors.
it could be something with motor cables etc, but then I would expect more randomness in the moment the error happens, which I don't get from your story.

Please try with the spool holder removed first though, it can catch the bottom of the bed when the holder is already visually past the spool.

I'm having the same problem. I tried removing the spool holder - it didn't help.

    I tried cleaning the Z-screw with a paper towel - didn't help.

I cleaned the Z-screw with a tooth brush several times and that seemed to work.

I seriously doubt cleaning the z screw makes any difference. I'd like to see a video of the problem happening - I want to see exactly what happens in the 20 seconds before the error and see if it's the same error as there are several different bed leveling errors and they have COMPLETELY different meanings.
