I'm not sure how to explain it. But what happened was the file I tried to open in File Explorer had showed which application to choose. I clicked on Ultimaker Cura (5.8) and the only option was 'Just Once'. Since it was the only option I clicked on it and it had not showed up in Cura.

I checked the properties and changed the default app to open the file to Cura with the same result.

The file I am trying to print is a Calibration cube https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1278865

I am using a Ender 3 V3 SE with Ultimaker Cura 5.8

What is the problem here?

Call me weird 🙃 (you'd hardly be the first person to) but I never open STLs directly in Cura, I just open Cura and drag & drop them to the bed.

But the way I do things isn't important here, what is is getting it to work your way which is something that would work.

I see you have two entries for Cura listed there - if the first one doesn't work, try the other one. If that doesn't work, scroll down to the bottom and there should be an option that says "Choose an app on your PC". Click that, then navigate to the Cura installation folder, which by default is C:\Program Files\UltiMaker Cura 5.8.0\ and in that folder find ultimaker-cura.exe and use that.

If that works (and I don't see why it wouldn't, but assumption is the mother of all stuffups) I can't remember if there's an option for "always" when you load a program manually like that but at the very least it should add it to the list which automatically appears, then you should be able to select it and pick "Always" next time.

If you're weird then so am I as that's how I usually do it. However I have found that on my computer if for some reason I've had to start Cura in Administrator mode then drag n drop doesn't work & I have to fall back on opening from within Cura

No application that has been started "as Administrator" can support drag and drop from explorer. This is a Windows limitation.

Generally, you should never have to start Cura "as Administrator", and as a general rule it is a bad idea to do so which may break more things than solve it. If there is a specific reason you need to run Cura as administrator, please report it so that it can be fixed.

@ahoebenThanks that's good to know. I think i only opened Cura that way as a workaround for a bug some versions ago, which was preventing me doing something & noticed it. I can't even remember what that something was now... The brain cells aren't what they used to be🤯

Sorry, it hasn't worked yet. I did like you said but with the same result. Is there any other way to open it the way I usually do? Thanks!

Turns out only 3MF files work? But all kinds of other files will not work.

You can use the "open with" and "choose an app" method to open anything with anything. Or at least try to open it with that. I can report from testing that trying to open an MP3 file in Inkscape doesn't lead to any productive results.

Its the same result, Open with, ultimaker-cura.exe then nothing. Not sure if it is my computer or a bug with the software because ultimaker will not open at all when i open the file.

Nevermind. I solved it on my own, I redownloaded the software and changed the .exe to another name (For me UltiMaker-Cura1.exe) and set UltiMaker-Cura1.exe to the default and it suprisingly worked. Thanks man!
