Posted · no supports generated, layers floating in air

Hello 3d printers,,,

I am trying to print a model (attached file) , ideally as a shell, so 0% infill,

is a car model and many parts are overhanging with an angle close to 0.

cura doesn't generate supports correctly, I have played with angles and minimum surface area of supports but still some layers are just floating in the air as circled in the screenshot attached.

cura generates supports for overhangs external to the part but not internally, I have selected supports everywhere but still doesn't work.

any advice is very welcome,,,please help

thanks everyone

If you could share the Cura project file (.3mf, get it set up then go to File > Save Project) that would help a lot more than just having the STL because we can see what printer you're using and what settings you currently have selected.

Sorry Slashee, I was waiting for a slice to finish.

@Liska3D There isn't a way to do this.  Your model is a solid and not a shell.  The hood and roof are almost horizontal which means they require support to print, but because Cura knows the model is a solid - Infill is indicated rather than support.

You can experiment with "Lightning Infill" which is very sparse at floor level and builds up for the overhangs.  Assuming you are going to remove that back wall and any interior support/infill Lightning is probably the best choice for this solid model.

You can try using other patterns with "Infill Support" enabled and using "Gradual Infill Steps".  There might be some advantage to that.

The problem is that you are giving the slicer one model, but want it to print like a different model.

MS 3D Builder has a "Hollow" tool and you might be able to alter your STL so that it can be a shell.

I notice that the bottom of the model isn't flat.  There will be a lot of short supports generated under the model because of that.

This has been hollowed in MS 3D Builder with a 2.4mm wall.  The wall thickness depends on the scale of the model and I guessed at the scale.  I added a couple of support blockers configured as Cutting Mesh to make a cutout in the floor and the back wall.  At 50mm/sec print speed this is a 50+ hour print.
