It sounds like your mainboard has more than just an SD card slot problem. If you tell Cura to raise the temperature of the hot end then Cura will obediently send an M104 command through the USB cable to the printer. At that point the printer should heat the hot end.
There is a manual command box "Send Gcode" in the Cura monitor screen. You can try sending G28 (auto-home), M104 S50 (hot end), M106 S255 (fan speed 100%) and M140 S50 (bed temp) to the printer. Type in the command and press "enter" on your keyboard. Asking to activate different functions might narrow down the problem.
If the USB is the only way to communicate with the printer and if it used to work but now it doesn't work then you might be looking at having to get a new mainboard. The upside to that is your SD card problem will also be fixed.

In the Cura 5.8 stable release, everyone can now tune their Z seams to look better than ever. Method series users get access to new material profiles, and the base Method model now has a printer profile, meaning the whole Method series is now supported in Cura!
