If I didn't know better, I'd swear this topic was flamebait (so I'll be keeping an eye on it).

Put simply: there is no "best" version. But the "recommended" version is pretty much always the latest.

  • Some people stick with certain versions because what they have does what they want so "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
  • Some people (I fall into this category) always update to get the latest features, and when there's a "how the hell did that make it through beta?" problem (usual answer: not enough people testing and submitting bugs in the beta) either stick back to the previous version for a little bit or (my preference) work around it - I have written post-processing scripts solely to fix problems with particular Cura versions (like 5.7.2 adding heating instructions to the start of a file even when there was valid heating code in the starting gcode).
  • Sometimes a particular version has bad enough problems that even I'd advise the previous version, but they usually get patched pretty quickly.
  • Some people stick with a particular version because they don't like a change that was made in a future version. The most common example of this I can think of if is people who stick to 4.13.1 so they don't have to deal with the Arachne engine.

Fair enough. My suggestion and you can take it for what it is worth is please and its just not Cura but software in general......... please fix the problems in the current version before proceeding to the next.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Fact is some bugs are just %$&!ing impossible to pin down so you can't dedicate all your time to hunting for them or you'll never be able to get anything else done.

The developers don't usually read the forums, but trust me when I say they're at least as frustrated as you about many of persistent bugs (I'm not a Cura dev, but I do some programming as a hobby and I've gotten somewhat 😠 at things I can't fix).

Arachne is certainly a lot less crash-happy than it used to be. It doesn't help that many bug fixes are "behind the scenes" so people don't know that's happened while they see the new features so it seems like they're focusing on that.
