Z Seam question

I have the Z-seam Alignment set to default (Sharpest Corner) and Seam Corner Preference to Smart Hiding.

Using Ultimaker ABS and the Cura Ultimaker S5 / ABS print profile.

I am trying to eliminate, or lessen, the Z seam.  Help!  🙂

    Hi @LePaul,

Did you check out the "latest" version of Cura (started at version 5.8.0), actually really do much in removing the Z-height mark. As you have a S5, just check out thouse late versions of Cura.

    Thanks

Try setting the "Z Seam Alignment" to "Random".

That doesn't really eliminate the problem - just moves it to a random spot each layer. It's visible enough that you're going to see it every layer, just in a different place.

@LePaul does your slice have a separate Z seam on the outside (square) wall or is it just that one? If it only has the one then the new feature @Torgeir mentioned in 5.8 will help. For Walls > Z Seam Alignment select User Specified. That should cause a checkbox to appear below it called Z Seam On Vertex - turn that on, and then set Z Seam Position to one of the corners of the bed. If it works, it'd be a bit of a hacky solution (since it doesn't resolve the underlying problem) but it's one of those things where nobody cares how you get the end result, as long it works 🙂

The problem appears to be overextrusion on the seam. If you have Travel > Retract at Layer Change on, try turning that off (especially if you have Travel > Retraction Extra Prime Amount set to anything above 0.0mm³). Also make sure Walls > Outer Wall Wipe Distance is set to 0.0mm.

If none of those were a problem to begin with, try turning on Experimental > Enable Coasting. It stops extruding slightly before the seam so that any material which is still in the system with enough pressure to come out fills that gap. If that helps, it could take a bit of fine tuning to find the exact right amount. Don't forget Slashee's Silver Rule™: Small scale testing is your friend.

    Hi

Thanks @Slashee_the_Cow.  I had to go into the settings to enable Z Seam on Vertex

I set Z Seam Position to Back Left

Seam Corner Preference to Smart Hiding

It's still there but a tad better.
