What printer are you using? With many printers you can just disconnect the Bowden tube from the print head without having to take anything apart. If you can, just heat up your hot end to around 200° and pull the filament out, wait for it to cool down and feed the new filament in as normal.

I fully support getting as much use as you can out of what you buy (I definitely do) but as a guide, 1-2 feet is not much at all. Here's one of my test models I use shown on my printers 220x220mm print bed:
The model itself has a bounding box of 44x10x16mm. Printing it with my usual settings uses approximately 3.3g of filament - around 1/300th of a spool - but that much is still about 1.1 metres (over four and a half feet) of filament.
