Bye bye soft and hello shiny lol! However the soft coating felt really nice like silk or satin or something, very smooth to the touch!

I have 2 more skulls to play with,

The shinyness really brings out the subtle imperfections! This is because im not dipping and only light brushing trying to maintain maximum detail. A long dip would sort out most layer lines but at the cost of sharp corners and subtle cavitities.gonna try a blue patina one next. They always look sexy but decay real fast if not sealed right!!! I may have to do a terminator skull next...

I thought about it, but not that much is lost, and considering i model everything by hand (no fancy edge loops or hard edges, altering and trying to get a perfect amount of depth in a groove or over raising areas which will melt down seems an impossible task. also i print at random sizes and vaying the size would alter the detail level. Im going to soak the next skull in for my usual 35seconds just to see whats lost and do a comparison. This one has practically no loss of detail and even the layer lines on the bottom are visible.

Well for those interested theres not much difference in detail in dousing the object in acetone other than you get more spots for longer than a quick brush. But thats about it, i guess i must not have covered the bottom of this other one above all that well. The issue with over brushing is that after you have brushed off the additives in the PLA PHA then there is less smoothing material left behind because you have essentially washed it off/out. If you over acetone it could split due to drying out. But I must say since using the s5 I have not had one model split on me regardless of how much acetone I used. It must be the fact that on my UM2 I was printing so low that some layers had simply not bonded as well as I had thought.....Oh well some nicer photos, had to be done.

The one on the left has been brushed on for a whole minute as i didn't have enough acetone to dunk it! and the one on the right is just a quick wax on and job done. I finally need to buy some more...Id say 1 litres of acetone lasts me about a year. Thats good value!

Quick projects in the works.

Uncle Creepy Bookshelves. Books are printed separately to facilitate painting them and the bookshelves itself.

They all fit perfectly. Base is not finished. This was just a quick print to stand things on to check for balance and such even though they will be locked down with glue. So far so good. Walls will be about 14" tall with the floor extended to a 10" x 10" base.

Steampunk version of the "Proteus" from 'Fantastic Voyage.' I am designing the interior because I figured how to make clear windows. So, this was just a test print to see how it felt in my hands....And, BTW, the lines in the windows are when my fans stopped working efficiently...so, yeah, little things can have a big impact. But will work out fine once I make the master with the interior parts.

SteamPunkProteus.thumb.jpg.3070bf93a12488e29fc16345940a4016.jpg

This is where the interior is at this time. This is just a 3D rendering of my halting progress as I take care of other things. The single seat chairs are just placeholders until a make more period appropriate set of chairs more in line with the observation couch.

This is the ship that I a started to play with making clear windows. So far so good. But, this test model got a bit too hot in the cleaning bath and is a bit warped in a few areas, but the windows and other parts that need lights showing through work just fine. Making the cockpit for this thing.

SpacePatrol.thumb.jpg.403e6cabd34d92069321286a25e743ef.jpg

Just slammed this together in about 2.5 hours just for funsies.

Very nice work Kman. And you said you were only a cartoonist! ?

OK, how about cartoonist and basic gadgeteer.....

And, if you ever read Manga or seen anime, those cartoonists are very, very good at mechanical things....

@SandervG The windows are actually vacuum formed over a PLA Negative. I am not printing a set of engine positives for the Proteus and will use an alganate and then clear resin. Well, that is the game plan at least.

I am approaching this like a model to be built and lit up  with LEDs and fibre optics. Once I get a space cleared out for that type of work, I can finally finish some of my lamps too.  I really want to finish up Kanigawa.....

    Oh...and, thank you ?

Nice print! Ive been meaning to go big, but only when i think my sculpt is good enough. Ive been unlucky lately in melting filament together lately and keep waking up to the run out of filament message. I never had this with tr filament. I guess some just join better than others and too much retraction just pulls the join apart. Soft filament doesnt join as well as brittle filament for me. I guess ill just have to turn off retraction when using spliced filament leftovers using certain filaments. Left something under the buildplate the other day and almost got a heart attack when the platform lowered and a super loud mechanical screech yelled out when it hit it!! Luckily there must be a shut off as it only lasted like 5-10 seconds. Seems ok now!

    Thanks!

I had luck, filament didn't run out, but I thought it would. So the filament sensor and how good it continues after changing material will be a test for the next bigger object.

I wanted to print a real big thing, it comes out really nice, but now I don't know where to place the sculpture ? In most places it is too big and don't looks good, anyway I will see....

Yes 75cm is big! would look good in the garden though! I want to do one about 40cm and put it on my mantle piece, but I'm doing a lot of nude sculpts at the moment, learning how to sculpt the whole body in fantasy comic style and real life so it need to be tasteful but still cool enough to look at and enjoy. ( I still have a lot to learn, I hate doing toes, arms and thighs at the moment, and breasts are also difficult to make them look normal/believable looking. Squishing of the skin is nice to look at if done well so Im having a go at that.

And with material changes, the sensor change is fine, but only if its not too long. If you are in the room or get to it soon after it runs out, you can change the spool and it will be perfect, but if you come to it after 8 hours after being idle, then the top layer would have shrunk a bit and the new layer will be very noticable.... well in my experience anyway. Still better than an instant fail.

P.S. is the join just above the top of the robe?...I always try and spot the join.....eitherway good job!

Garden is a good idea, not now but when spring comes, I will search a nice place. I should drill a hole in the back to fill in some sand to make it more heavy.

There are 5 joins, but well hidden and I had luck that the fit is nearly perfect. Some parts are a little bit sanded to hide the spot. In natural you see the joins, but I took the photo just with my phone and this cam is not so sharp which helps also in that case ?

I never sculpt something and I am not sure if I can do or learn it ever, so I only print ready to print sculptures. I am not very creative and can also not paint or draw, so I think sculpting is similar and needs a lot of creativity.

My next print will also be a nude model, really nice and I like such things to print. But it is not easy to find good ones. At cgtrader I've seen some nice models.

CG Trader has some purloined models that are being sold. Some are taking real world objects, getting them scanned and then passing them off as their creation.

And then there is the copyright issue of mass selling of major characters.

    It ios.

But, black sheep aside, the site should do a better job of curating things. One of these days someone will see their stuff and come down hard on them for being the sellers, of which they profit from.

Scanning is ok, but you can always tell its been scanned unless some work has gone into it. Some of my face/body scans are as low as 20-30% scan and 70-80% creative reconstruction as i call it. I personally dont need engineering acurate parts so a scanner would be pointless to me as I would have to fix the scan after anyway. A base to work on is very helpful. On the copyright thing, I always wandered if you could sell your own made stuff from movies with impunity. I have a friend who makes cosplay items like clothing and such and he says he is always getting told to remove items for copyright reasons. I wonder if its just the name. Could you sell a darth vader outfit as 'futuristic black armour outfit'? Lol.

....and sculpting is easy to learn, but like 3d printing, its addictive when you gain experience!! I need to go to rehab....

The intellectual property laws differ a bit from country to country, and they are very complex. There is *copyright* which automatically makes the creator of any original piece of art the intellectual owner. Then there are *protected models*, in which a company can protect its brands and models. And then there are *patents*, which can protect new technical equipment and manufacturing methods. Copyright is automatic and free, patents and protected models have to be applied for and paid for.

    Generally:

    - If you make an original piece of art (=something new, it doesn't exist yet), you automatically get the copyright to it. No one else can sell it without your permission.

    - Often but not always, the law allows you to make a copy for personal home use only, of a copyrighted work of someone else. This differs a lot from country to country, and also depends on the type of art.

    - Small portions of a work can often be copied as citations, and for scientific and educational use. In case of discussions, the judge will have to decide if this was fair use or plagiarism.

    - Generally, it is forbidden to copy and sell anything (or even give it away or put it on public display), unless you have written permission from the copyright holder.

    - In addition to copyright, commercial models are usually protected as "deposited models" too.

    - You can not copyright ideas, laws of nature, etc. So it have to be exact, concrete materialised models, texts, music, paintings,...

So, you can not make a verbatim copy of an art statue and sell that. But you could make a totally new statue that is vaguely inspired by the existing one.

You can not copy and sell existing movie characters like Donald Duck, even not in different poses that are not in the films or in their shops. Big companies like Disney make sure that all their characters are deposited models.

You can not sell a verbatim transcription of a speech given by a professor in class. But you can write down the contents *in your own words* and sell that. However, if the data from the professor were indispensible for your text, thus you couldn't have written it without his input, then again the professor automatically becomes co-author of the text, and you need his permission to sell it.

Or you can not copy and sell existing models like a Chevrolet Corvette. You need a written permission and license from General Motors to do so. But you could design a new sports car that has some vague similarities to a Corvette, let's say a coke-bottle shaped body.

Some people make a verbatim copy and then modify only a tiny little part, to sell it as their own creation. This is not allowed. On the opposite side, some big companies try to suppress anything that even vaguely resembles any of their characters or models, which is not allowed either.

So you can not copy a Dart Vader costume and sell that. But you can design a new space suit that has some vague similarities. If you do, it is always a good idea to make sure the thing is inspired by multiple different sources, and you put a lot of your own creativity into it. And document it and keep the intermediate steps, especially if you want to sell it.

I am not a specialist or lawyer, but I read a bit on this subject. It is all quite complex, with lots of exceptions and vague borders. So in case of discussions, which are likely if you have a big commercial success, the judges will have to decide. And the one with the most money or patience usually wins...

So I suggest that you google a bit on the subject. For those who speak Dutch, the Belgian government has a good website on intellectual property. At least, they had. It is now in the process of being renewed, so I don't know what will come out of it.

I don't believe in brazen mass production and selling of other peoples work, as in the case of the unhappy face 3d print lady who had that guy basically taking her items like the dragon and stuff from thingverse and just selling it on his ebay account which appears to finally be shut down. Its people who just ignore any form of copyright at all I hate. I remember someone selling Ultimaker clones and not even thinking they are doing anything wrong when they actually use an ultimaker with logo and all to advertise their clones??? Some people are just stupid and and some people pretend to be stupid to try and be treated like those who are genuinely stupid, and live on unscathed to keep on attempting new illegal schemes with impunity. A lot of devious people on this planet all after as many ducats they can get.

People also alter fonts slightly in their logos to avoid paying....google and facebook are just a few companies that did this I think. Its not only small players doing this sort of thing!

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
