Hi guys !

I just orderer Ultimaker, but i am searching on this forum and cant find any tutorial how to start with 3d printing.

I have only some small knowledge in drawing in Solidworks, nothing else .

So i was wondering - will I get in kit some basic tutorial how to start ? Where to begin ...what software, what are steps ... etc....

It will be great if someone can write a tutorial for us who have never been in contact with 3dprinters.

So what are the first step when you wonna something print ?

1.) draw something in some 3d software(let says Solidworks)

2.) blablabla

3.)

4.)

xy.) send file to Ultimaker to start printing

What are all other steps from 2.) to xy.) ??

And second question - it will be nice for each step to name what software is using for each step...Or common software that is using ... And what are alternatives to that SW

I just want to be prepared when it comes , that i have some knowladge to start print. :)

Thank You very much !! :ugeek:

PS: i am little affraid because of NO knowledge, and dont know how to begin

From our last 3d-printing-event in Toulouse, I made this 8 steps ready-to-print manual:

    1. Download Arduino 1.0 -

    http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software

    2. Dowload latest version of Marlin:

    https://github.com/ErikZalm/Marlin/zipball/Marlin_v1

    3. Upload Marlin on Ultimaker arduino mega 2560

    4. Download latest version of Cura:

    https://github.com/daid/Cura/downloads

    5. Download a STL model from

    http://thingiverse.com

    6. Open Cura (from start menu on Windows, or ./cura.sh in a Mac/Linux Terminal)

    7. Load the STL model in Cura, let the default parameters and "slice to gcode"

    8. Open Pronterface (from start menu on Windows, or ./pronterface.sh in a Mac/Linux Terminal), load the gcode file, preheat the extruder to 220º and print

    Thanks, excellent instructions.

I was stumbling around trying to get my mac to talk to the printer with RepG after finally finishing the build late last night. Following your instructions it finally springs into life and out pops a little box about 30 mins later!

I'd replace step 8 for a beginner with "print from Cura using the print model button", Although these days I use print run most of the time.
