This is how to fix a S5 that freezes and reboots at random

We have a couple of S5 , one works flawlessly,  doing multi day prints all the time.

the other has been a temperamental dog from day 1.

we brought it second hand, so limited support available from the reseller.

we were about to replace the main board. $$$$ and thought. Would try something first

 

has been completely apart, every connection checked and cleaned.

it will go fine for shorted prints, but fail, black screen and reboot during a longer several hour print.

 

it appears to get either a board overheating, or a power brown out after running for a long time.- I suspect the power supply has a thermal cutout kicking in.- I also see on on the  newer versions they have ducted the fan over the power supply for cooling… so possibly a known issue.

 

 Pulling the bottom cover off, and running an extra fan blowing under it has eliminated the use.

 

this might be useful for anyone chasing intermittent failures on longer prints and random reboots- at least it’s an easy test.

 

I’ll be replacing the back fans and pad testing the power supply soon.
