Support layer Skipping?

Hi guys!

I' m having an issue with this printfile I attached: At layer 7 Cura seems to build only the outer walls, and apparently skip one layer considering the inside structure of the .STL file? The actual inside structure only starts at layer 8. This seems to be true for both the support and the actual structure of the .STL file. Could you maybe take a look at this and tell me whats going on here? I have printed similar objects before, just with a different inside patterns and I havent observed this behavior before until now.

Edit for further clarification: I expect at least the inside support structure to be printed at layer 7, together with the outer walls of the object. Without this, everything that appears at layer 8 in the print preview would not be in contact with the last printed surface of the object at layer 6. But for some reason even the support structure only starts at layer 8!

Thank you alot!

Most of this appears to be that the noodles on the inside don't all hit the floor on the inside.

This is in MS 3D Builder.  The orange ones look OK but the yellow ones don't rest on the floor.  The size of the gaps varies from about 0.3mm to 0.7mm.  If that's the way you want it, then yes, it needs support.

It looks like Cura is slicing the model correctly.  With Supports enabled in the preview, it looks like this.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here, but it seems you have an odd combination of settings for this model as well.

    For example:

    • Bridging is turned on but there aren't really any bridges.
    • The "Initial Layer Height" is 0.1 and the layer height is 0.2.  The initial layer is usually the thick one.
    • You have the "Infill Density" set to 100% when there really isn't any space for infill (it's a fixed thickness shell).
    • Supports are enabled at an OverHang Support Angle of 0.0°.  That means support "everything from horizontal to vertical".
    • The "Z Gap" of the supports is 0.01.  With a layer height of 0.2, that narrow gap may not be getting hit and so there might not be support under some of the noodles.
    • The "minimum support area" and "minimum support interface area" are both at 2.0.  That may be too high a number for some of the noodles and so there is no support being generated for some of them.

It seems that if the floor of the model was thicker then the noodles would all touch the floor and supports could be turned off.  If you need those gaps then changing the Support Z Gap to 0.0 and the Minimum Support Area and Minimum Support Interface Area to 0.0 would put supports under each noodle.

This is with a thicker floor and all the noodles are attached and supports are turned off.  For this model this is layer 11.

@GregValiant Making the floor thicker would actually solve all of my problems, since the noodle structure must not change position, but still needs to be attached to the floor. May I ask how you made the floor thicker?

    Kind regards!

I'm not Greg, but I'm going to assume he increased Top/Bottom > Bottom Thickness (or set a number of Bottom Layers manually). If his screenshot is from layer 11 then he's probably made it at least 11 layers thick 🙂
