Posted · z height doesn't match start gcode?

I am trying to print something and i looked at the "start gcode" in machine settings and it says .2mm. this doesn't change when doing different layer heights, but the printer clearly starts at different heights for different heights of layers. what gives?

    Unless your startup gcode manually specifies to use the same layer height as the print, it will be inserted as is. It's not a problem in the slightest and won't affect anything about your prints.

    but it doesn't specify using the same layer height as the print, but it is. even tho the gcode isn't changing, the print starting height is changing with varying layer heights

    After the startup gcode, Cura inserts a move command to the start location of the print which includes moving it to the correct layer height for your print. So the nozzle's Z position during the startup gcode has absolutely no bearing on the height at which it prints.

    That last Z=0.20 height in the StartUp sounds pretty low to me.  My preference is "Z2.0" which insures that the final Z of the StartUp is always above the Z height of the initial layer.  That makes the next move to the start point of the print a "downhill" travel.

    If the final Z move in the StartUp was:

    G0 Z{layer_height_0} F{speed_z_hop*60}

    The Z would be at "Initial Layer Height" prior to the first travel move of the actual print and that travel move would be parallel to the bed.

    I like starting higher though.

    Last move of my startup gcode is at Z0.28. Hard to wipe your nose from 2mm away (if you're a printer with a 0.4mm nozzle, anyway). It does wait at Z2 until the hot end has ended getting hotter because we don't want drool clogging our nozzle before the nose wipe though. If it can't get from Z0.28 to the initial layer height before it reaches where it starts printing... well that doesn't really matter because it's not like there's anything there for it to run into.
