Posted · How can I get Cura to print the first layer all the way across instead of going around

I have a cover I'm printing that has vent slots in it. When I print, it goes to the vents, around one side, then fills back in. Now you can see a definite transition line from where the lines come back together. And it does it in several spots. Is there a way to make Cura either jump over the slots and finish the continued line? Or even when it get to the far edge of the slots, if it could come back to where it left off before continuing on to the end of the cover before finishing the open areas.

When I get my phone back from my son, I'll try putting a picture on to show what is going on.

If you could post the Cura project file (.3mf, get it set up then go to File > Save Project) that would really help because it contains your model and your current printing settings so we can see what might need to be changed.

Just going by the description though? Try turning on Top/Bottom > Monotonic Top/Bottom Order. This will make sure it always prints stuff going (for example) from the left of the plate to the right of the plate, even if it adds more travels to do so. Normally it's used for the visual quality but it might be what you're looking for here.

Also, if there's a visible line it's possible your flow rate isn't high enough. Make sure your printer's e-steps are calibrated correctly. I usually set Material > Initial Layer Flow to 105% to aid adhesion but a little overextrusion will also help reduce gaps.

I don't generally save the 3mf file. I usually just save the gcode to the sd card. It's a semi large cover of 427.4x234.85mm on my CR10-S5. I will look into the monotonic settings and increase the initial layer flow.

Always a good idea to save your Cura project files for this exact reason: if you need to go back to it and change something... you can. And since each project file stores its print quality settings you'll be starting from exactly where you left it, in case you changed it in the meantime for something else. Better to have the project file and not need it than need it and not have it 🙂
